Yeah, so what. All this handwringing over waiting or not waiting for LiDAR... If regulators don't approve, it's moot. They will not approve eyes-off level 4 unless there are redundancy of sensors. While LiDAR is that, it doesn't mean they will automatically approve. Too many unanswered questions around level 4. Like who is responsible for accidents? All that will take legislation and layers of court appeals/challenges. The gears of govt. move slow, that's been answered long ago. Until it is approved, those with LiDAR would just be contributing to a development platform.
Well put.

Adding to this, the non-LiDAR units will benefit from the LiDAR units training the system. Stated by a Rivian dev in one of the videos that came out recently:

Re-reading this, it does say Coastal Cloud is optional on Performance.
That is very good news--I couldn't go with a black interior.
Black interior is a deal killer for us.

Just put my reservation in. Hope to see some movement late this summer or this fall. Not in a rush.

I had pondered R1 and really loved the drive but my wife got nervous about a $100k car. Even if some of the extras cost extra, this is more our budget.

Before 3/12, I told myself…
-You don’t need the performance model
-You definitely don’t need the Launch Edition
-You don’t want Borealis
-You want to wait a year or 2 and get a used one later
-You might just wait for the R3

Today though. FOMO is real.
"I'm gonna keep my R1T, the R2 will just give me so much less for so much more than my R1T.

Guess who sent in the buyout paperwork for their lease today to get ready for an LE?

Trying to pull some strings to borrow a badge to get in. TBD
You need a badge to get to the R2 roadshow?

I cannot speak for others who do not take bait & switch seriously. But it sure is clear that I do, isn't it? Especially when it involves a $45,000 motor vehicle. In any event, the case would be tossed out of court immediately.
JFC dude give it up already.

If they continually charge extra for the "fun" colors, they will sell fewer of them.

That's what I find most annoying. They charge extra for yellow or red, which is pure margin for them any actual costs are minimal, and then when nobody is willing to pay $2k extra for it, they cancel it instead of reducing the add on cost to see if that would encourage more buyers.

Mustang Mach-e First Edition
Somewhere during the initial announcements a few months back RJ was saying it was tripled coated for all UVA/B/C/X and for energy/heat.. not sure how that works. Probably still need a liner insert at some point.
I live in Phoenix, and have been driving my First Edition Mach-e in the desert for 5 years. The solar filters on an all glass roof that is not very darkly tinted keep the interior very comfortable. More heat comes through the windshield and side windows than the sun roof. Holding your had up near the side windows feels the sun's heating considerably more than holding it near the sun roof. I've been tempted to add tinting to my side windows, but unlike other cars I've had, the tinting just didn't seem as needed in the Mach-e, even with the all black interior. I have never felt the need for an opaque shade on the sun roof, and expect the R2 will be similar.

There are films developed specifically for windshields that have very minimal tinting while still providing same or similar heat rejection properties as those that are tinted. Just about every tint shop has a product in this category.

And you know this how?
I said "bet" not "know." There are not that many launch edition customers for ANY of the big EV launches over the past several years (as a proportion of reservation holders). Rivian said it has 200k reservations. At a typical conversion rate of less than 10% that means @UnsungZero_OldTimeAdMan has a good chance of being asked to configure as soon as it opens. The Silverado, Lightning, Cybertruck, Fisker, all saw that level of conversion from the reservation list to the initial launch purchases.*

We will know soon enough. I would not bet my life savings on it but I would bet a free paint upgrade.

*Rivian's was higher but it had a very special set of circumstances (people incentivized to buy at 15%-20% below MSRP).

Not me. I don't have a reservation or intent to buy another car for at least another decade. And where did you get this 10% conversion rate? the ACME magician kit?

Not that AI is always right. But for fodder's sake...

Google Gemini:
Information on the specific, public, and finalized conversion rate for Rivian R1 reservations is
not officially disclosed by the company.

However, based on investor reports, analyst estimates, and industry precedents from the provided search results, the following insights can be gathered:
  • Overall Conversion Trend: As of late 2023, Rivian had high conversion rates, with a 97% delivery-to-production ratio reported in Q3 2023, though this dipped below 80% in Q4 2023.
  • Contextual Estimates: While individual reservation conversions for EVs (like the Ford F-150 Lightning or Cybertruck) can sometimes be under 10%, early R1 pre-orders likely had a higher, but still varied, conversion rate.
  • Factors Impacting R1 Rates: With increased interest rates, some reservation holders have chosen to wait or cancel, with estimates of customer follow-through on orders ranging from 40% to 90%.
  • R2 Reservations: For the newer R2 model, over 100,000 reservations were confirmed in 2024, with some speculation that 25% or more of those might not convert to final orders.
  • Sales vs. Production: Rivian has generally maintained a high cumulative conversion rate, with over 86% of produced vehicles being delivered to customers as of late 2023.
Personally, I don't have a horse in this race. But I don't believe I'm wrong in observing R2 enjoys much greater anticipation and enthusiasm than when the Mach-E was announce. For the Ford, most of the chatter was debating whether it had the right to be a Mustang.

Yes, and other cars I've had could have benefited greatly from these virtually transparent tints on the windshield. However, those tints weren't available when I needed them, and my Mach-e really doesn't need them. Oven mitts were useful in Phoenix for previous cars but the factory tint/filters today, at least on my Mach-e really do a great job of keeping the scorching heat outside of the car, even after hours parked in the afternoon sun.
