R2 "Deliveries in Spring" but you can't configure/order until June?

You're forgetting half the globe. June Solstice is the start of winter in the South. And with climate change in full swing, basing your seasons on meteorological events is going to be pretty tricky. In the US midwest, it's not unusual for us to see all four "seasonal weather events" in a single week, sometimes in a single day!

They are the meteorological seasons (used by weather services) precisely because they do better align with weather changes around the world. Astronomical seasons are not the same length and make climate tracking more difficult, not easier.

This is exactly how new products have been marketed for decades. And there’s nothing misleading about it. Especially for a vehicle, any vehicle, when it’s impossible to even produce enough for “most” to get it in any quarter.

Most people see “available in Spring 2026” and immediately think “so a few will be delivered in June” and then hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Frankly, I'd like some influencers (like Kyle) to get one before I do and run it through the tests. I want to know where it excels, what the pain points are etc. An R2 in the right hands will greatly influence my purchase choices.

Not to appear immodest or anything, but I'm way more interested in my own personal driving evaluation than anyone else's. Any speculation when R2s of any trim available for a demo drive might turn up at Rivian sales/delivery centers around the country? When did R1 demo drives become available in relation to the R1 launch date?

I'm holding a very late reservation (November '25) and probably wanting to buy a Premium supposedly not available until late this year if that, so hopefully I can get a demo drive of a Performance if nothing else before my number gets called? Also, I will be on vacation this August very close to Normal IL, any chance there would be an R2 on hand there to at least examine in person if not actually drive?

Regarding this spring "confusion":

1) Rivian does not know exactly when deliveries will start. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they are working as hard as they can to launch the R2 and get a good vehicle (as opposed to a bunch of lemons) out as soon as possible, but unforeseeable things can affect their best plans, so rather than a firm date, they guess, and rather than say something like "Q2", which sounds like corporate speak to investors, they say something more broadly understood: "Spring 2026"

2) I assume, as I would guess most companies would, that most people realize that Spring in the Northern Hemisphere runs from March equinox (which has yet to arrive, BTW, we are still in winter) to June Solstice. Or would you rather them say "Q2?"

You asked for a guess: if production ramp up goes well for Rivian, the 30,000th R2 rolls off the line Dec 2026 and the 100,000th R2 rolls off the line for Christmas 2027. If current demand (up to your reservation) goes well for Rivian, they have well over 100,000 R2 reservations and 20% - 25% will stick. So maybe your place in line could be 30,000 - 40,000 and by mid 2027 is possible. However, I hope things go extremely well for Rivian (meaning R2 is what everyone hoped for) and you are actually 50,000 to 60,000 in line AND they somehow still manage to deliver yours before Fall 2027.

you have a good safe guess. It could be earlier or slightly later. Most people will cancel just because 2 years has gone by and people's situations aren't static. I see plenty of people buying and keeping R1 or they bought before the tax credit expired.

I'm perfectly happy to let the test pilots work out the bugs this time around. They won't get me out of my trouble-free R1T QUAD until there is a tri-motor variant available anyhow (don't care about LIDAR).

Even though I'm unfamiliar with Rivian's early model bugs, I'm also happy for a bunch of people helping to work those out before I get mine. My mustang is a Gen 2 and most of the kinks were smoothed out by then too.

c'mon guys, you know, surely, that launching a new car is a massive project that has thousands of critical tasks, most of which are dependent and contingent on the completion of previous tasks. We are in the terminal phases of the project, but there are still probably hundreds of tasks yet to be completed.

It's not like the folks at Rivian are just sitting around arranging flowers until they decide to start making new R2s.

If there are any snafus in the process, that will impact quality and delivery.

When they say "spring" they are hoping and guessing.

They probably are giving themselves some room just in case, but if you've ever worked on such a project, you know there are going to be snafus.

You seem to be off a bit on your guesses. If Rivian produce 30k in 2026, why would they only produce a further ~70k in 2027, when they have a full year of production?

They've guided to 20-25k R2 for 2026, but they're probably sandbagging on that number so they can be sure to hit it, even if they run into unanticipated delays. If things go really well then they might get to 35k+ for 2026, especially because they have already said they plan to be exiting the year operating a second shift.

Full capacity at Normal is 215k vehicles/yr. For 2026 Rivian guided to similar numbers for R1S, R1T and EDV production as in 2025, which would be around 42k plus or minus. So maximum capacity for R2 in 2027 would be ~170k, assuming similar production numbers of 40k-45k for R1S, R1T and EDV in 2027 and if Rivian were operating from Jan 1 with three shifts. But we already know they only expect to exit 2026 operating two shifts.

So 2027 R2 production is likely to be somewhere between 110k (two shifts for the year) and 170k (theoretical but very unlikely three shifts all year), with the final number being dependent on when they move to operating three shifts, which seems a likely goal for sometime in 2027.
