I'm a bit skeptical about the 3.7mi/kWh number, even though it's mathematically accurate - my Tesla Model S barely reaches 3.8mi/kWh, despite having a similar weight, a smaller frontal area, and a much better drag (0.208 vs 0.3).
When has Rivian published drag numbers? R1 was speculated to be ~0.3 so it would make sense if R2 is lower.

It's possible they are just talking about of the wheel itself, but hard to know.

Yeah the grammar on that sentence leaves it up for interpretation for sure. The comma after drag is the part that confuses things. If it wasn't there, I would for sure say it was talking about the wheel & tire's drag coefficient, not the vehicle at large.

Commas are funky things when you think about them.

I think RJ or Jeff talked about CD in the video with Kyle and specifically mentioned managing to keep a CD of .3 in spite of the boxy design of R2 but I don't think there's been anything published.

I'm still skeptical of the 3.7 as a realistic real-world number. My R1S (Quad Large Gen1) is rated at about 2.45 mi/kWh EPA. That's definitely achievable at highway speeds in the right conditions, but I don't think the R2 could come close to that at highway. It seems to set owners up for disappointment.

R2 is smaller & has more areodynamic considerations than your R1S. Those two factors alone will help out, plus we don't know exactly what kind of efficiencies that Rivian cooked up with the new Maximus motors for R2...

I of course know the R2 will be more efficient. But given the efficiency numbers of other EVs out there (such as Tesla, BMW), it seems like that number will be hard to achieve in real world.

There is no official EPA rating for the R2 yet. Rivian's estimate of what the EPA rating will be is as accurate as you're going to get, and should turn out to be very close to the official number.
All EPA ratings are manufacturer-provided. There's no reason to think Rivian would publish a number that doesn't agree with what the final number would be this close to launch.

Correct. Typically self-tested and self-reported. Unless audited (and given motivation to do so), EPA mostly review manufacturers' documents and rubber stamp. EPA has no manpower to test every single car to verify what is in those reports. Certainly not under current administration!! One has to be completely out-of-touch to expect/assume otherwise.

We really need to have owners report on "real world" numbers. Some reports at 70mph, some during stop and go driving and some at semi-rural travel.
