Thanks for commenting on the fact what is called black is more gray. Can you provide a little more insight on that, is it a really dark gray, a medium gray or a lighter gray? And is there more than one shade, such as seats vs dash? My 2022 R1T is the Forest Edge so I don't know what the R1 black interior is like, and have wondered about the R2 crater color.
My opinion it is between a medium/dark gray. I had black in a Jeep and a Tahoe, the interior in my R1S is lighter than those and the R2 shade looks like my R1S.

My wife does not want black but is good with what will be in the R2.

No light interior at launch would be a surprise IMO, I feel like I watched most of the launch materials and launch timing was all about the trims, not options. (Remember when R1 only had one trim?)

At this stage as a company, their relationship with suppliers must enable them to handle two interiors without much problem (R1 has 5).

We'll see!
Well I asked a rep at todays R2 Event in Venice and he said no light interior on the first launch editions, but he said that there would be a light interior launch edition. What that means for timing I have no idea. But a real bummer.

white or light colored ? What Tesla has is terrible
Saw a sample at the Venice R2 event, its definitely more of a light grey and nothing like what Tesla has. I had no reference, but most likely very similar to R1 light interiors

Because it's what most people get, so the supplies for it (fabric, leather, fake leather, etc) is cheaper due to economies of scale.
Do they actually choose black, or do they settle for it because that's what manufacturers THINK that's what people want?

Black isn't even my 3rd choice for interior color.

Actually this is good news for those that want a light interior because they get the opportunity for the launch package and the savings included.

My only hope is that it means I will get it around December. I was already nervous about how long it will take to get my R2 since I waited a year to put in the order after the announcement. I know the line is pretty arbitrary since R1 ownership, location, and desired trim, lidar waiting, and just plain old conversation rate from reservations to orders will affect where you are in line (which is a lot of variables).

Well I have no desire to drive inside a coffin, but to each their own, etc.

Might a 3rd interior launch for MY28? Tan or mid-gray?

Unless you have an expiring lease that you can not extend further it’s likely best to wait on Rivian working out the kinks and also pick up a Gen 3 closer to year end. Unless you’re a YouTuber and feel compelled to cry “first”. there will be issues with early builds and we already know Gen 3 comes with improved technology. In a software defined vehicle, the last thing you want is near immediate obsolescence.

Improved autonomy software at a later date. Infotainment chip is the same. Everything else (battery, motors etc) will be the same too.

Hmm, kinda disappointing if so. Was really hoping for something lighter than the existing ocean coast interior. While I still prefer it over black, it is still too grey for my liking. Was hoping the R2 was slightly lighter.

We won’t know until we know. Rivian can’t tout all the Gen 3 improvements now for fear of suppressing demand at launch.

You really think within one year of release they will change the batteries, motors, interior, etc?? The only changes will be Lisa’s and RAP, potential new interior color choice and exterior paint selections. Major changes will wait for several model years to maximize revenue and profit. They have been designing this vehicle for 3-4 years they won’t change within months.

Agreed.
RJ did state faster charge times are coming down the road, most likely with new battery chemistry and higher voltage....but I'd imagine that's at least 18-24 months out. Competition is not going to let up though, so they will need to keep up if not lead.
