Has anyone tried the DIY retrofit? I’m curious if any coding/backend work is required or if the software auto updates once the motor/switch are plugged in?

How would that even be possible? You can’t buy the parts from anyone but Rivian. And Rivian doesn’t sell it without appointment and installation. Unless you happen to find one from a salvager…

I am one the ones missing the harness.
You can buy the harness online and @Riviot was at one point offering to buy components if interested, but that may have changed. ( I’m new here).

This is my interested path forward.

Imagine a perfectly good Tonneau going to waste on a Rivian that was totaled in a front end collision.

Ideally, Strip the parts for the tonneau and transplant it into my own.
The only real question is whether or not I'd need the powered tonneau software unlocked (*or if the software always has it enabled and it just needs the hardware to be recognized)? Or would Rivian be willing to unlock said software if I acquired said hardware transplant?

My neighbor was looking into trading his Gen1 Quad for a TriMax, and I half jokingly asked if he thought the dealership would notice if it was traded in with a non-powered tonneau :D

The answer would be a big fat no, they don't play nice to anyone doing work on it without their approval.

That did change when I got slapped with a cease and desist. Something about "inappropriate access" to service manuals.

Rivian R1T R1S V2 Powered Tonneau Cover ($3300 installed) now listed in Rivian Gear Shop 1000008372

It really puts a damper in my enthusiasm for the vehicle/community when they pull shit like that, part of the reason I stepped away for a bit. Don't blame me for your faulty UI granting anyone with a login and address to the webpage access to your manuals. Or for your company being behind the demand curve for <insert upgrade/tweak/accessory> and losing out on in-house sales. Rather than set up a parts department and publicly selling manuals like EVERY OTHER OEM, let's restrict the ever shrinking DIY community instead. Gotta maximize receipts of those $250/hr rates while paying <insert publicly available repair tech rates here> and put those lawyers to work serving letters to the fine folks selling black out kits literally years before you, and stealing their idea, rather than collaborating.

Dang, sorry to hear that! Completely agree with everything you stated. Parts and manuals should be accessible to all of us especially with how the service department is handling the demand…

I could understand their sentiment when practically every vehicle was still under warranty even partially to make sure as issues arose they were aware of them to try and fix it on the line as they go. But now that so many vehicles are going out of warranty by miles or time, it really seems like they need to get with the times on this. Some states actually have Right To Repair laws that would even require it. Manual access for reasonable rates as well as the ability to buy any parts and specialty tools needed easily is critical. We shouldn't be forced to use Rivian service outside the warranty period...and perhaps even during.

ALLDATA did make an announcement that Rivian guides would be available thru them:

ALLDATA Becomes First Third-Party Provider to Add Electric Vehicle Manufacturer Rivian to Repair Software | ALLDATA

I've not signed up or paid for anything to check to see if the guides are in there now or not, but it's some form of progress, anyway.

I'm supposed to be getting my tonneau replaced next week and got the Estimate. If i'm reading this thread correctly, if they are doing the PT01177477-B Roll up Cassette, that is the newer 36 slat version correct?

I took my 2023 R1T in for service last week (just fixing some things from the previous owner). The tech met with me to go over my tickets and he asked if I verified if my vin could be retrofit with the V2 PTC. I told him the Rivian chat person told me it didn't have the wiring harness. He said he would pull of the top bedside panel and check that for me. He said the chat person was correct and mine doesn't have the wiring harness and you can't splice them.

Adding an additional data point: customer service told me my ‘23 R1T VIN 20xxx is eligible for the V2 PTC and scheduled it as part of my SC visit in 2 weeks. I’m not sure how to check manufacturing date (bought the truck used from a third party dealer) but if it’s something I can self serve finding out, I’m happy to report back!

Manufacture date is on the driver’s door sticker.

Curious. My 2023 with 199xx VIN was marked as not eligible, unless they've updated their database since they first announced the retrofit.
