When we got our first Rivian, there were all kinds of features we expected to use every day. But over time, some things end up being used far less than expected. Apparently, the same is true from our customers.

We’ve heard things like:
  • Certain drive modes (Or adjustable air suspension all together)
  • Gear guard (Does anyone use the Gear Guard cable?)
  • Highway assist
  • The onboard air compressor
  • The front-facing camera
Then there are features people didn’t expect to use that often but now use all the time (the Gear Tunnel is a way of life).

Curious how that’s played out for others.

What did you expect to use more?

I used the long Gear Guard cable everyday for 2.5 years to secure a bicycle rack placed on the truck bed. I used the extra length to secure a bike on the rack during a quick stop. It prevented “casual theft”. Then I switched to leaving my Interrobang tonneau cover on, and placing the bike derailleur side up, front wheel off and in a wheel bag, on a moving blanket inside the bed. That way, the bike was more secure, and I wasn’t climbing into the bed at the orthopedic height. It’s also faster than using the bed rack.

I use the gear guard and cable very regularly. We ride our mountain bikes and then go grocery shopping or grab lunch afterwards. It allows us to park in the city and not feel like my bikes will get stolen. I also use the compressor to top up my hike tires. Ive built two small decks with the compressor.

i also got hit last summer at the co-op parking lot and was able to use the footage to prove fault.

For me the glass roof was too hot. After one summer i covered it. Also, the camp speaker. I used it once at a party and it was a cool “party trick” but has essentially been full of problems since. Like not turning on when I did want to use it. It passively turning on and off while sitting in my driveway.

id love to an opportunity to fill the frunk with ice and beer, but sadly Ive only used it to store my tools.

The roof rack rails I purchased. I have a large Thule to go on top that I needed all the time in my Ascent. I haven't used it once with the Rivian in 3 years because the frunk is so large we have enough space for everything.

I never use the dynamic glass roof feature. I thought I would need it to help shield additional sunlight but the standard glass is more than adequate. I’ve never used gear guard.

Like others have said, I have never used the camp speaker. Have not used the flashlight and what iz really thought we would use on the regular basis is the 3rd row seats. In 2.5 yrs, it's been used twice. the 3rd row capability was one of the main reason for buying R1S.

- Camp Speaker, used it once by the pool when I couldn't get the outdoor sound system to work. Never really used it again.
- Torch, I can't count how many times I used my cellphone flashlight, dropped my phone, fumbled around trying to get enough light, then remembered about the Torch after I was finished.
- Roof racks, bought them, along with snowboard /paddle board rack for those wonderful trips to Mammoth every year. I have driven my F150 every year to Mammoth since we bought the Rivian, because my wife needs the extra room for all her "Stuff". This July will be the first time I drive our R1S to Mammoth (fingers crossed).
-Glass roof, was too hot, and it has been covered ever since we bought the cover/ insert.
-Third Row seats, we have a husky liner matt that covers the third row when it is folded. Probably used the rear seats 3 times in 2.5 years we owned it.

- I like the camp speaker the few times I've used it. But the buttons are unintuitive as heck. Mostly now it just dings at me occasionally to remind me to take it out and charge it outside the vehicle, which is mildly annoying. Already had it replaced once under warranty when it started making a screeching noise, LOL. 🤷
- I carry my own flashlight on my belt but for people who don't, it's nice to have one.

- I don't use the air suspension for anything notable. Just leave it on "auto". It does whatever it does when I get on the highway, and I just hope it doesn't break and leave me with a huge repair bill after the warranty is up. 🤪
