Are these actual ‘production’ vehicles or is Rivian still making Validation Builds?

These should be production vehicles, unless the employee took the picture a while back and is just now posting it...

Employee deliveries have started, or will be starting very shortly, and those are production cars, as said employees are actually buying them.

Here's a stupid question: If these are production R2's, how do they know what to build if the reservation holders haven't even been able to specify what they want?

I’m guessing all the early production going to employees and they’ve had access to the configurator to spec the cars.

Given how many are being built, they will likely just make several they expect people to get (likely the free esker silver with 21" rims, black interior) to get things going on. In other words, it will be matching configured vehicles to existing orders as things start to ramp up so I expect more unique configurations to be delivered later on and the more mainstream ones to come early.

I'm sure they have a pretty good idea of what most people will want. There shouldn't be very many variations anyway, so they can build up some stock ahead of the official launch.

They're not bespoke-like any manufacturer, they're estimating demand and will begin stocking supply. If you want a color/style etc that's not in stock, you'll wait longer.

Yep, that's kinda the point of a launch edition too. It limits the number of trims they need to crank out early on.

I’m actually surprised We haven’t seen the typical drone videos yet.
I don't have a drone, but I'll cruise by the holding yard and keep an eye out. Might be hard to tell the R2 from the R1S at a distance though.

I think the early employee runs are done, or will be this week at the most.
Early production runs of LAUNCH vehicles have nearly no options other than color. At least core configurations, not add-ons That can be added post mainline manufacture and production roll off, or could be done easily on a spur and then back on the main production line.

Color is the main variable, and early production runs will have paint-shops focus on day/s of week. Monday, while day, Tuesday Catalina Cove day, etc.. then all cars come off the line in color batches. At least the paintshop will work this way, production may be more variable.

That will last for many months as everything is just Launch Edition for a while.. optimizes the production and refinement till it can then be more bespoke.

But cars will almost certainly NOT come off the line in reservation order or anything approaching that. Ppl will land in a WEEK probably, most likely due to paint shop bunching and delivery destination, etc.
