Hey all — curious if others have run into this.

I have a 2022 R1T and had my 12V battery replaced in Dec 2024. Just got a notification again this month (April 2026) saying it needs to be replaced… so barely ~16 months later.

What’s throwing me off:
  • I don’t drive the truck that much. I have ~27k miles
  • No obvious issues lately
  • Now it’s out of warranty, so I’m assuming I’ll have to pay

Is this normal?? It feels kind of crazy to be replacing a 12V battery this often.

I’ve seen some chatter about 12V issues on these trucks, but wasn’t sure if repeat failures like this are common or if something else might be going on (parasitic drain, software, etc.).

Has anyone else had:
  • Multiple 12V replacements in a short time?
  • Been charged out of warranty for it?
  • Found a root cause beyond just “bad battery”?
Appreciate any insight — trying to figure out if this is just how these trucks are or if I should push back with service.

I had mine changed in October of 2024 and just had mobile service out to replace it again a week ago. I wasn't experiencing any issues, though I did get the 12v warning (in yellow, not red) on my dash for a few minutes a few days before they arrived to swap.

I was contacted a month before they were able to come out to do the swap. The service advisor I spoke to on the phone simply told me that their engineering team determined that mine "wasn't charging as efficiently as we'd like". I wasn't charged for it and the replacement took maybe 30 minutes.

If you've not actually observed error code warning of 12V failure, they could be just doing another pre-emptive campaign. Did they tell you "at no cost to you" or that it'd be out-of-pocket? Make the appointment, ask lots of questions. 12V warranty is 3yrs/36k mi.

If out-of-pocket, you might want to consider aftermarket battery (like Ohmmu for example, which has its own BMS and smartphone based remote monitoring). If you choose to go this route, you can always cancel the service appt..

Shared in another thread, insider told me they can monitor for draw/over-voltage remotely. No specifics are given to explain whether this notification is due to an monitored event, or just general a fleet-wide service bulletin (or just a certain VIN range). It could also be unintended consequence of a prior OTA (causing excessive draw from the 12V, i.e. staying awake too long or waking too often).

I was also told early batch of cars had out-of-spec circuit board where a mounting point did not have correct tolerance with nearby components. The screw could make contact and cause a short. This lead to the circuit board needing to be replaced. But, if you have a fried circuit board you would know.

I’ve got an appointment scheduled for this Thursday, so we’ll see what they say. The notification popped up right after a software update, and now I’m seeing the red battery icon on the dashboard.

I’m also going in for the toe link recall at the same time, so at least it’s all getting looked at in one visit.

Really hoping Rivian doesn’t charge for this — having to replace a 12V battery every 15–16 months at ~$800 feels pretty excessive.

Btw I started the appointment no one from Rivian reached about the battery or toe link recall.

If it was already replaced, there might still be warranty left from that replacement. If you are seeing the red 12V icon, keep your SOC above 30%.

for 12v battery it is 36k miles/3 years warranty
And remember that that timer does not reset when replaced under warranty. Once you pay out of pocket, the warranty is only 24mo/24k.

It's the second battery though.

So wouldn't it be 36K miles and 3 years warranty for the new battery as well?

In any case I have to do the battery replacement as well. The first battery lasted 3.5 years so its definitely outside of the warranty.

Edit: A poster above said the new battery was warrantied for two years. Its far short of the two years for the OP so I don't expect that they'll be charged. They also shouldn't have been charged for the first replacement.

Unless he paid for the replacement 12v, the warranty did not reset. This means his original 3yr/36k warranty has long since expired on his MY 2022 R1.

This. Factory battery is 3/36. But if it’s replaced by Rivian that one has a 2/24 warranty.

Your 2022 R1 may have two 12 volt batteries.

The replacement batteries you received have a 2 year warranty. That came directly from a Rivian service advisor when I had mine replaced.

That only applies if you pay for the replacement. If the replacement is covered under warranty, then the original warranty period does not reset.
