I would release it in a 2028 gen3 refresh. But I don't work for the company. This would follow the 3 year cycle (gen1 = 2022, gen2 = 2025, gen3 = 2028)

would be nice to get a real refresh in 2028 but I doubt that would happen that soon. 800V+ charging and 500 mile range would be nice options to have.
If they do anything at all for Gen 3 aside from the new chip and lidar, I hope its the switch to 800V. Would make sense to have it for the R1 before the R2. It is getting difficult to consider purchasing a new vehicle with out an 800v architecture in 2026.

I don't see 500 miles anytime soon.

800V high voltage and 48V low voltage would be nice.

Except Gen 2 was released in mid 2024 ...

Yes but as a 2025 model year.

my guess is also the same. 2028 model year with gen 3 hardware. I imagine both R1 and R2 will release gen 3 at the same time. For R1 I only suspect LiDAR, new steering wheel controls, and perhaps a new color to keep it interesting.

Rivian isn't going to be able to raise R1 pricing in the foreseeable future, so I'd guess R3 will arrive and R2 will be mature way before R1 is refreshed. They need a very mature R2 revenue stream and new R3 to inject cashflow into more R1 R&D.

That's a major redesign so I would think it wouldn't happen until at least 2030 and hopefully by then we have higher density batteries and get 500+ mile range
Yep. They just redesigned all the electrical systems going from Gen1 to gen2 on the R1 to simplify and cut costs and I'd presume that same simplified electrical architecture transferred over for R2. Moving to 800V would likely mean revamping the entire lineups entire electrical system from the battery on up, which would be a big overall to the entire production line.

I don't think it needs a total redesign at all. Adding LIDAR sure, switching to 800v, yup. What else? Maybe the R2 steering wheel.

switching to 800V is a total redesign of the electrical system. Might as well redesign the mechanical system too.
