I'm in no rush to buy but my wife and I are pretty set on getting R1S Tri for me, R1S dual for her and I'm waiting for the gen 3 models. My best guess for when they will launch is either very late 2026 for 27MY or mid 2027 for 28MY.
They'll include the R2 improvements like lithium or sodium 12V, Rivian computers, 2nd gen heat pump, steering wheel at the very least.
I would like a 800V pack with faster charging, 48V low voltage system like in the Cybertruck, Lidar, but none of that is a deal breaker for me.
For those thinking this is going to be a long wait, I don't think it will be. The expected improvements (ported over from R2) are pretty straight forward upgrades and it makes sense from a cost perspective to streamline logistics and software development around common parts and also to stop paying Nvidia for the drive computers.
Rivian has internal product road maps, and it makes sense to say order enough gen 2 heat pumps for both R2 and R1, rather than continuing buying two SKUs, same for the drive computers and steering wheel etc. Then align the R1 refresh to begin after the R2 ramp as the older R1 parts are used up. That's why I don't think there's going to be a very long wait.
