Would love to see Rivian put LIDAR on the R1 first!

I have a 23 R1T on a lease to end in 2027 and plan to stick with it or an upgraded version of it because I like having a truck. Being a Gen 1, I know there is already a Gen 2 but I would like to have a chance at a Gen 3 with LIDAR since this will eventually be a differentiator over non-LIDAR vehicles. Lots of talk on the R2 about when LIDAR will come to the R2, but am I the only one that thinks Rivian might be smarter to juice up the R1 first with it early next year as a needed refresh rather than introduce it so soon after the R2 launch?

I don't see any reason for Rivian to increase their build cost by adding this to anything they're not planning on marketing as full autonomous.

Hell, I'd love some freaking glove boxes and the charge point in the drivers rear in the R1, but also don't see that ever happening.

My opinion - the R1 cookie is baked, Rivian isn't going to add any more chocolate chips to that cookie.

R1 is Rivian's 'halo' line, but that doesn't mean that they are going to add every little bit of tech as soon as possible to it. Eventually there will be a Gen3 version of the R1 line (development on it has been mentioned at various events according to posts here and elsewhere on the web), but R2 has priority right now, and they were better able to quickly integrate LIDAR into the design.

In other words, it will come to the R1 eventually. R2 needs to get produced at a steady clip first.

At my R2 test drive I had this convo with the guy that sold/delivered all of our RIvians. I won't recount the details, but he certainly seemed to think this was coming to R1 s00n. (Like early 27.)

It will probably be added to the G3 R1 series with the new computer suite.

It really makes sense to add it on the R2 though as they plan on using the data to quickly build out their large data model for the autonomous driving suite. Given that scenario there will be many more R2s on the road feeding that data model than R1s.

I had a similar conversation at Rivian’s autonomy day and had a similar answer.
I think the chances that R1 will be first are low. They’ve already started shipping R2 bodies that have the changes needed to put in the Lidar. Why would they not put them in when ready ?

Introducing LIDAR will likely require the accumulation of a great deal of training data in order to realize its full potential. Accumulating that data will be faster if there are more vehicles providing it. Hence the R2 is rhe better choice. Besides, the R2 already has the provisions for LIDAR built into the design. I can foresee that Rivian will loose interest in improving te R1 vehicles.

Smarter? No. They're are using LiDAR for total feelt autonomy validation. That means as many vehicles as possible on the road doing validation, even the Rivian delivery vans would make more sense in this regard. R1 will benefit from the Gen3/RAP 1 compute update more. I suspect that when R1 finally gets it's first major facelift, LiDAR will be included.

Yeah this is the key point. Initially the main function of LIDAR and RAP1 is to collect lots of high value data.

By this time next year there will be more R2s on the road than R1s. R2 is the high volume vehicle. If you want to collect data, you want the package on R2 asap.
