my much smaller 2009 Nissan fob has not died. Haha. I cannot under stand anyone wanting that thing in their pocket for 10 years. It has four buttons. Lol.
Have done a tiny bit of semi/chip work so 90% of that object is UI. Just a bummer. Why?
so you would prefer a large object in your pocket 18 hours a day vs a smaller one?
Sure if function is an issue, but what rivian cooked up was way more style over function. It’s half the size of my phone which is 10x the computer in terms of utility which was 20 times bigger from 10 years...
lol. I value my pocket space!
As long as there are other options I’m cool. But I am a tech guy. Bigger does not make something cool. Smaller and innovative does.
So no one is going to moan with me about the giant fob? Lol...
Its actually the first serious disappointment with Rivian...I guess I'll have to see it. Would be nice if your phone worked too so you could have the giant fob at home as a backup....
I am not an offroader per se, but know a few people that do...They all run pretty large tires and modified rigs to fit them. Not sure I'd want to cut up a rivian and I wonder how the internal "computer" would handle huge tires. But they are rock crawling, which may be a subset of offroading...
A little off topic, but same with my Xterra...Gas mileage in town is terrible and its not the most powerful car either.
Going to look forward to standing at a gas station a whole lot less...
I can give you my rationale if it helps. First, I never want to buy a new ICE vehicle again. I like capable vehicles - great on-road, off-road a little, snow, lots of stowage. The ICE options are Land Rover, Range Rover, Jeep, Toyota, GMC, etc blah blah.
Rivian 0-60 3.0 seconds - blows them...
yeah curious if ODB2 is gone in the Rivian. I have zero idea.
I also did not know about a separate 12v battery in EVs - this will be my first. Is that a wear part like in ICE vehicles?
Same Metromile...Surprised the fob can drain a battery, even in two weeks of no driving with a healthy battery. I had similar issues when my battery was on death's doorstep, but never really thought to blame the fob, new battery zero issues to date. The Rivian would absolutely not have that...
The concept of insurance, I think should related to better real-time data. I mentioned this on another insurance thread but I pay a base fee and then a rate by the mile determined by how much coverage I want. The insurance company keeps track by a fob in my ODBII port w/ a cell signal. I don't...
I use Metromile and hope to continue using them unless Rivian come out with a by the mile insurance. I pay a small-ish monthly flat-rate and then a few cents a mile. I have saved quite a bit since the pandemic and really like the model...If I was a long, daily commuter not sure if it would...
Funny, of all the cars I have owned the Scout is the one that stings the most that I sold it lol. Having three cars older than me, having a kid, moving into the city, yada yada - it was the responsible thing to do but...I still think about tracking down another 800B after a beer or two :)
Honestly, I would not recommend the launch addition to most of my friends or family. Buying a 1.0 in a fairly new market (EV's) probably does not fit what most of them want. I like cool things, wanted on EV but needed a SUV/Truck, so when I saw the Rivian it was an immediate go. But I expect...
We are after different things. I'd like to be largely off grid, have a slick interface, solar, some AI for TOU, and a backup solution - no generator, zero interest. I also don't want to lose power every time I go to work if my house does not have power, or if I am out of town...I don't mind...
My point is there are sophisticated whole energy management solutions right now that integrate batteries, solar, generators, TOU, offgrid, ongrid, charging patterns, circuit priority, load balancing...etc.
I having seen the Enphase system up close, it is incredible...Maybe this charging company...
I agree, there is not a downside per se, other than every time you drive somewhere in a power outage your power goes out again. It's more that companies like Enphase, and Tesla (powerwall side), are working very sophisticated energy management solutions. Choosing to go off grid, TOU...
