  1. Another positive SC experience (Memphis Service Center)

Took my R1S to the Memphis service center for sn alignment, wheel rotation, backup light recall, and a small list of annoyances like a loose roof trim piece. They reached out last week (for the recall) and although I didn't have any pressing issues I asked if they could take care of my list at...
  2. Not going to be using the R1S as a roadtrip vehicle again

I'm guessing you live near a coast. I live in the southeast, and drove a Tesla for 8 years before the Rivian. In that time, I never once waited for a supercharger, and have seen stations full maybe once or twice. The only stations I've seen close to full are in urban areas or dense suburbs...
  3. Cost for NEMA 14-50 Install in Indiana

I would expect less than that in flyover country. My installation about 9 years ago in Memphis was I think around $400. About a quarter of that was for labor (it took one guy about 2-3 hours working by himself). He just looked at it, quoted me a completed price, and was done by noon. Like...
  4. 50 amp vs 40 amp vs 30 amp

I never suggested that EVs have anything to do with it. I typically don't drive much, and over the last 8+ years my daily driver has been an EV I honestly haven't even noticed an increment in my electric bill. I think the biggest problem in most of the country is poor corporate governance...
  5. 50 amp vs 40 amp vs 30 amp

I've thought about it, but it's not a good fit for a lot of reasons: The payback with local utility rates (and no local/state incentives) would be more than 30 years, not including the batteries, and enough battery to run my house for more than a day would be prohibitively expensive. I can get...
  6. 50 amp vs 40 amp vs 30 amp

I’ve had four power outages since July ranging from 10 hours to over three days. There is very limited public charging infrastructure near my house, and what there is is often not working, especially in the aftermath of a storm with widespread outages in the city. I’ve contracted an...
  7. 50 amp vs 40 amp vs 30 amp

Another (probably cheaper) even more versatile option to cover the "once or twice a year" scenario is to buy a portable generator capable of maxing out the plug-in EVSE so you can charge one of the vehicles with the generator, and not have to load share for the other. I bought a 9.5kw Generac...
  8. Plugshare compromised?

It may be entirely innocent, but it sure looks suspicious. There are still negative checkins on lots of sites (including some of mine). I will be watching to see if I see a pattern, although I've quit using the Rivian for cross country driving until we have NACS access. The regional CCS...
  9. Plugshare compromised?

The entire history and checkins for the Memphis EA station (the only fast CCS in the entire city) has been memory holed. The station has been completely off line for several months, and had been the object of a lot of criticism. Looking at other EA stations in the region, checkins are still...
  10. Per Guide: 250KW max charging and streaming services coming soon

The 360 kw is possible at 500 amps, but only at 720 (or more) volts. Ohm's law. The Rivian has a (nominal) 400 volt pack, and in practice a bit more than that which is why we seen 220ish speeds at times. As stated above, 250kw charging isn't happening with current CCS hardware.
  11. Input on 14-50 outlet install

Opinions will vary, but especially for occasional use I’d just put in a 14-50 outlet. It will be cheaper, and the mobile charger works fine. I use my mobile charger plugged into a 14-50 all the time (it rarely moves, doesn’t get removed and plugged back in) and did the same thing, on the exact...
  12. Blinker noise is annoying.

I was waiting for someone to go there. Seriously though, if the noise bothers you drain, flush and refill your blinker fluid with a full synthetic, which should fix it...
  13. Should I bail out or stick?

Another possibility is to just carry a small generator for an emergency. If you think the numbers are 95% likely to work and leave you with enough charge to get to a real charger after your stay, a small generator in the frunk could give you an emergency "get out of jail free" card. It would...
  14. Should I bail out or stick?

That doesn't sound right. On 20"AT tires, I typically see 1.8 for very short trips (my daily "commute" is under 2 miles) in 100+ degree temps, using the app to precool the cabin frequently. With highway driving, I typically see 2.0-2.3 mi/kwh at 70 mph in 100 degree temps. I have limited...
  15. EA fixed a station in the southeast

I've been complaining for months now that EA has never fixed a charger or station that I've reported broken. That's no longer valid--looking on Plugshare today the Jackson, TN EA station appears to be fully functional for the last couple of days. It had been derated "for active maintenance"...
  16. NACS Retrofit on current R1T/R1S

I was in the same boat as you, having driven a Tesla for eight years, and spoiled by a robust charging network. In my (southeast and midwest) experience, it's pretty rare to not be able to charge at all at an EA station, but be ready for severely derated (as low as 30kw) cabinets, and only some...
  17. R1S - Camping privacy window cover suggestions

They fit ok, Not great. Could use a few millimeters of adjustment here and there on some of the templates. They are a bit bulky to store when not in use. They do Very effectively isolate the cabin when in place. I was Very comfortable in a crowded (and noisy) campground. I’ll get some...
  18. EA Pass+ and pricing change update

I -do- have extensive SC experience, and never had an issue once in eight years of Tesla ownership. This was mostly in underserved "flyover country" but some on coasts in high demand areas. I now have about six months and around 3500 miles of cross country experience with CCS, mostly on EA...
  19. Help me choose my new cook system

OK, so I actually looked it up. Page 214 of the online manual: "If the 120v circuits overload, the power cuts off. Unplug devices before you turn the outlets back on." I'm led to assume that you can try something and if it overloads, just unplug and don't do it again. As an aside, the...
  20. Help me choose my new cook system

I -think- I know the answer to this, but the overcurrent protection on the 120v inverter isn't an actual; fuse, right? On most of my power packs and other devices, the overcurrent protection is an automatically resetting device, maybe a PTC or similar, so you just remove the load, wait a bit...
