This week, for the first time since I purchaseda year ago, I charged out in the wild. I was quite impressed the seamless process at both RAN and Chargepoint locations.

I was quite shocked however, to find find a Chargepoint location—in Española, New Mexico—charging a mere $1 per hour! It appears to be subsidized by the Avanu quick stop.

The tesla charger w/magic dock I used in PA back in June/July was .99. From what I have experienced that is the exception.

That is definitely the exception. RAN will pretty much always be the cheapest DCFC option and most others will be quite a bit more. Especially the truck stop locations.

Are you both talking about the same thing? If I understand @dgennetten correctly, that’s a great rate of $1 per hour at a 50kW charger / $1 for 50kWh / $0.02 per kWH

I think the $0.99 Tesla rate mentioned by @Osyras is per kWh but I’m not sure I’m understanding or doing the math and unit conversions correctly. I’m just curious…

my understanding is that OP is referring to a cost of 2 cents per kWh approximately. Which is great!

@dgennetten, was that a single plug/pedestal charger? Also, was it activated by card reader or did you need an app?

Yes, at $1 per hour. It's much cheaper than my garage!

The DCFC in Monticello and Bluff Utah are free. Bluff can give you as much as 80kW (60kW if someone else is charging). Monticello is 60kW if one car is charging and 30kW if two are. They’re obviously not comparable to the 150kW+ sites, but they are FREE.

I’ve also found some chargers in small-town Colorado that run in the $0.2-$0.35/kWh range. They’re typically slower chargers, but greatly appreciated.

I make a point of spending a little money at a local business when the charging is clearly subsidized in some way. I appreciate the effort that goes into putting a DCFC in a rural location and I like to give back to that.

I regularly go for subsidized charging at $ per minute not KWH. Usually Chargepoint/EA/EVGO in Walmart or other retail parking lot. Charges are $5-8 versus $25-35 @ $/KWH rates to 70-80% when charging rate plummets.

Is there a good way to map these heavily subsidized locations?

Speaking of WalMart, I used one of their new Walmart EV charging network stations last month... it was seamless and FREE when activated via the Walmart App. It is my understanding that it is one of their first prototypes and they plan to start deploying nationwide later this year. They were installing cameras at each station... the technician said cameras would be monitored for ICE vehicles... nice!

It was two Chargepoint pedestals, four parking spots. They first time,I used it from the Chargepoint app, second time, from Rivian routing.

Not really takes some small amount of work. About 15 minutes of research before each of my last 3-4 trips. I'm off to charlotte this weekend and did the same. Click on each charger and check the rate looking for time not KWH in the rate.

It's a balance really as during a drive I might pay more for a charger if near a few restaurants, but go to Walmart for supplies before heading out or back to get the big charge while I shop for snacks, water, basics roadtrip stuff.
