Research has proven that any attempt at multitasking while driving, even if it is hands-free, is a distraction that can cause drivers to make serious mistakes.

Couldn’t agree more and thanks for the article.

I’m referring to actions I’d consider no more distracting than selecting and listening to music or a conversation with passengers. I too limit even hands free repsonses to things like “Home soon”, “Talk later” and for fun “TLDL” (Too long. Didn’t Listen.).

Sure, I do get that. And we all do distracting things when we drive, myself included. I never text, but I have taken the occasional hands free call if it’s something important (then try to find a place to park to finish the convo). Even messing with music choices or switching from the nav screen to the gauge view all fall into that category. One thing that I wish Rivian would do is allow for adjusting the HVAC fan speed without having to go into the full HVAC menu.

I had a job for about 12 years where I put about 50k miles on my vehicles per year, driving to all my accounts in CO/ WY/ KS/ NE/ NM then from NYC all the way down to DC. I had some close calls doing all that driving so I became really aware of how quickly things can go sideways. Especially in CO or WY deer or other animals just come out of nowhere on the road in front of you. I also saw people doing all kinds of crazy stuff while trying to drive their cars. Shaving, make up, reading newspapers, even eating salads or pasta!

We all do something, but I know I don’t want to be too distracted when the maniac salad eater in the lane next to me loses control of their vehicle ?

Much easier to tell passengers to "be quiet right now" than someone you're talking to on the phone.
Very true! I’ve had to tell my Mom and Aunt to be quiet or they won’t be allowed in my truck ever again - they are always arguing with each other:CWL:

I think Alexa can do that stuff can't she?

I think so. I hate talking to my technology so I haven’t tried it yet. I will probably have to change my ways…

Maybe someone needs to make a button panel that vocalizes the Alexa commands to the truck directly through the microphone wire so you don't have to.

I would be interested in that if they did! Although it would probably be easier to just learn how to use Alexa for the few things I’m interested in. There will eventually be something beyond Alexa that will require voice interaction so I better get on board finally

I'd like to add my "Coasting is safer" argument to the mix by adding another distraction: obsessively watching the blue/green motor input line as slowly dropping cruise control by 1mph/click coming into a town.

Easy enough for me to do this by going off the motor noise.

You can tell Alexa to switch to navigation screen. I haven’t tried asking her to switch to gauge view yet.

Great! I think they should also add when you take over steering (sometimes I do cuz maybe there is a big truck next to me) it should reengage the steering again automatically unless I choose to fully cancel.

I have noticed another improvement they need to make and this is an easy one.

Allow the heated seats to be turned on when the car is in reverse. When we are slowly backing out of the garage my wife cannot turn on her seat nor can the driver. If I’m backing up out of a parking spot and have to wait for traffic to clear the heated seats will not turn on. This should be a simple update.

That is an interesting bug. As a workaround you can turn the heated seats on through the app before you get in the truck. I do that on cold mornings and it's super nice to get into a preheated truck.
