Hi everyone, completely new to Rivian. I’m looking to buy an R1T as a secondary vehicle to haul my motorcycle to track days or head up to Tahoe for snowboarding or travels with family where I can bring a motorcycle along.

As many pointed out already, Rivian has done early summer model year cutovers, so @Bop question is very valid.

My rationale: To reduce supply chain complexity, it makes sense for Rivian to drop the R2's haptic steering wheel into the R1 lineup soon, especially since they already share the same Gen 2 underlying compute and zonal architecture. It seems like an easy parts-bin win for a mild 2027 refresh before a true "Gen 3" overhaul down the road I 2028. 2025 summer saw NACS ports added for early 2026 model release.

Am I crazy to hold off a bit to see if the 2027 drops with the R2 wheel, or should I just pull the trigger on a 2026 now?

I have ruled out used Gen1 due to not having full autonomy in future...and then I like the NACS port idea which bings me to 2026 but it feels like a mild updated 2027 is easily possible at minimum steering wheel and software and done?
I would hold out if I were in your position.

You are not in a hurry. You can wait. And while I don't think 2027 is going to bring any significant changes, you might be right about the steering wheel. And there might be some other nice improvements to take advantage of.

So if you can wait, you should. It won't be long. I expect the new model will be revealed within the next month or two.

@Bop are you waiting or talking the plunge now? @mkhuffman you may be right about a update in a month or two but incentives will go too..

I am tempted by the forest edge package but some reason it is not letting me have that and 1.9% APR - dont see things being excluded

I am same position. I was looking at R2, but seems like a horizontal vehicle change from Model Y. Same range, SUV crossover, etc. So I really was thinking about the R1T. I have always wanted one, and they have that 1.99% APR. But I run into the forest package not falling in line with "the deal". Might need to get someone to over ride something to allow the correct APR

But i want to hold out to see what 2027 brings. A change in the wheel doesn't interest me much. The big wheels were "neet" but in use it is easier to misc-lick. If i got a 2026, then 2027 put the NACS in the correct spot on vehicle. Passenger Front, or Driver Rear. I would be upset about getting 2026 then.
I am at least waiting for July, to see if they drop a new deal.

Well the deals aren't getting better … the $7k forest edge on R1t is gone… so I am guessing deals as indicator of new vehicle coming isn’t showing promise

i would think for supply chain sakes, they may change “steering wheel ” to R2 style, and may be under the hood improvements shown on R2 gen electronics trickle in before any main items like lessons learned in building r2 motor, battery pack to make its way..

my hypothesi is minor tech refresh before platform changes

Due to the heavy lift of ramping R2 production I expect 2027 R1 to be exactly like 2026 R1 from a hardware perspective. Maybe there will be some minor enhancements, or some cosmetic changes, but those would be a bonus.

Rivian just got certification from the EPA on the 2027 R1 vehicles on Tuesday. I expect we're going to get more information on them s00n. Only "new" info from just this info dump is they are changing trim levels to be Premium/Premium Long Range/Performance/Quad to vibe better with the R2 naming.

Incorrect - this Forest Edge package was always a limited time thing. Stated right from it's introduction a month or so go.
