Let’s assume that is a legit recovery and video.

That semi is at minimum 18k lbs.

The semi driver does appear to have the truck in drive so the Rivian would only have to pull it forward enough to get the rear tires to bite. Still would require some HP to do that!

I have 2 of these in my fleet, 17922lbs

He does have it in gear, but the truck is only 1 wheel drive until at least all 4 have traction. So its a dead pull until that rear axle gets traction.

This is awesome, but not surprising to me. I wouldn't be surprised if an R1T could do that for a truck three times that weight. So long as the frame can hold up to the stress and the tires can get traction, the power of those motors is way over what the tow rating for the vehicle is.

This is also an area where the R1T being very heavy is helpful (assuming it's on pavement. The weight would have potentially hurt it if they were both off the road).

The whole 'pull a train or pull a plane' thing is pretty misleading anyway. You only have to overcome the initial 0 inertia, once you get it rolling it takes pretty minimal power to keep it moving and accelerate the pulling.

For evidence, refer back to the old World's Strongest Man competitions where they'd have a single human pull a line of semi trucks or the like.

This isn't that impressive.

Yea, I'll say that the video is cool and great to see Rivian getting the exposure, but like said above, the whole plane/truck/train pull is misleading. Around here they have a charity event every year at Dulles airport where they pull the plane. That said, note in the video that it is on a wet surface, the semi is a little off camber as is the rivian... it isn't nothing, but not a miracle either..
