My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Oof, hope you're ok.

Hard to tell if it's totaled, but I'm guessing not. Generally they are totaled when there's structural damage or any damage to the battery pack. This looks like a pretty major hit, but still will depend on how hard the structure was impacted and whether there's frame damage.

Glad to hear everyone is OK.

There's a lot of "stuff" in the front grille - multiple sensors, horn, lights, air duct/damper, etc. My guess us not totalled, but $30K would not surprise me.

Well, what’s the market value with your odometer reading?

“In Illinois, a vehicle is considered a total loss when the cost to repair it, plus its salvage value, exceeds the vehicle's pre-accident actual cash value. This means if the estimated repair costs and the value you could get for selling the damaged vehicle are more than what the car was worth right before the accident, the insurance company will likely declare it a total loss.”

I had i minor damaged to my passenger door... initial quote was $25k+... and an estimate of 10 weeks to get it done. So, you're lucky if your totaled.

My first truck was totaled for less damage than that. These vehicles are really expensive to repair, and the "certified" shops that fix them are famous for revising estimates. My insurance company told me straight up that if it were even close to being totaled, they would rather total it than have the body shop keep increasing the estimate.

It’s not just about assessed value of damage, folks. It’s also dependent of each state’s rules over how insurance companies are allowed to operate and what can be deemed a total. Unless you are in the state of IL, your own experience is mostly anecdotal. Some states give insurance companies free reign. In which case they could total cars for any reason.

Depends... Did your airbags pop? If yes, totaled.

If not, 50/50.

Generally they are “totaled” when the insurance company estimates that the repair cost exceeds some set percentage of the vehicles current value….

Going to expand on this a bit...

Here is a 2025 model with very similar damage, but opposite corner, no airbag. Totalled. Est cost of repair $80043.

That used to be the way, now they take into account a lot of different variables. Rental Vehicle Cost, Parts availability, Shop Schedule Lead Out Time, and they are automatically adding in a percentage cost to the initial estimate given for "incidentals".

After having talked to a few insurance companies, Rivians are generally totalled in medium to serious accidents because parts are hard to get new, requirements of Rivian on "who" works on the vehicle (certified Rivian shop), and the lead time to get to get the work done.

100% totaled.
I had less damage (superficially at least)
I had posted pics on this forum but the topic got a little side tracked (saying this kindly- a lot of people were more concerned about the verbiage and whose fault it was etc)
Anyways the topic of discussion was cost of repairs for these vehicles. Extremely expensive due to several reasons

Again... depends on state laws governing the insurance companies. CA does not have restrictions on insurance companies on what can be deemed a total.

Start shopping for a replacement vehicle, just in case.

They will often do so at 80% of value. You can also push for loss of value.
