They are already out. I have a deposit on a Scout Traveler EREV.

the Scout is still completely run by the battery. The engine is only used to charge the battery. No difference in performance. The whole system will get 150 miles on battery alone, plus 350 with the engine charging for a total of 500 mikes without stopping. I don’t see any other vehicles with those capabilities on a rugged truck or SUV.
It’s not already out. A deposit guarantees nothing. They could scrap it all next year if they wanted.

The dealership battle could delay it. The American dealership model is suppressing EV adoption, so getting this handled could be great for the country.

Most of my local dealers won't stock EVs.

Sure, not much different from when I had a deposit down for my Rivian for 2 years. That’s how it works.

And there was a chance Rivian went under before delivering anything. At least Rivian had Amazon vans to sell. So as of today there are no EREV vehicles for sale in the US.

Zero chance from Rivian.
Scout if it makes it to market….that said, buying first gen anything is risky and VW isn’t exactly known for reliability as it is….
I took a chance on Rivian and got lucky (so far at 41k miles).
Sounds like you have a perfect solution keeping the 4Runner around!

We're a solid state battery away from never needing the range extender anyhow. If you can't swing it with the R1T, maybe try the Scout.... but even the Scout will probably discontinue the range extender with solid state.

We're using NCM batteries with 270 wh/kg battery density right now. Solid state are around 500 wh/kg density. Imagine the 131 kWh battery becoming a 260 kWh battery with the same weight.

If a 800v Rivian with 700 miles of range that could be charged in 30 minutes existed.... would you care about that stinky gas engine still?
No I would not. But if past is precedent, the ramp up on solid state is still a long way off. Additionally, research may soon be totally in the hands of private equity since the government is backing away.

The research has always been in SK and China. The US battery industry has never really factored into any of this.

At least they have a history of ramping up faster than we do.

OK, I’ve thought about this a lot myself. I’ve looked at a variety of generators and I think it’s doable with a decent size diesel or propane generator. The downside is going to be the noise. My thinking is that I would run the generator upon arrival at site and letting run for six hours at a go (about 36 to 45 kWh depending on the generator).

I like the propane option because it can be smaller, diesel is more efficient but a lack of pump necessitates height (hard to pack in the bed of my R1T under my RTT). Propane also burns cleaner and can be used for multiple purposes.

This thought isn’t completely baked and far from tested. I believe, though, with 10 gallons (two Jerry cans) of diesel or 40lbs (two bottles) of propane, I’d have better than 120 kWh of energy available for an extended trip or towing a small camper deep into the Maine wilderness.

Keep in mind, off-road travel is very energy efficient, so you won't need as much as you think.

I guess it depends on what the ratio of towing is to daily driving. You can rent just about anything on Turo for that 3 weekend per year use that most people prepare for.
Towing was just an example. I have friend who tows his jet ski boat to lakes from his SoCal home (Havasu, Powell, Mead and so on) multiple times a year and he will not buy an EV for his needs. Renting is an option but why when you have multiple vehicles?

Aside from rare U-Haul towing that I do, I have no real regular need for towing using our R1S. Our trailer hitch is used for a bike rack and folding cargo carrier when used.

For my use case, I just ordered a 2 seater sports car since EV does not exist for this category yet (waited for Cayman EV for few years and gave up - don't want to wait anymore as life is too short).

In a few months the Ramcharger will be out. It is a fully electric Ram 1500 with a range extender that is a Pentastar V6. They are claiming approx. 700 miles with a full tank of gas and a full charge on the battery. 4.5 sec to 60mph and approx. 14,000lb towing.

Karma Revero is the only one I know of off hand.
