I feel like at this point they must be holding the next release to coincide with investor day. I think the day will be a lot of information about RAN, R2, R3, data plan timing and pricing to start 30 days in the future after a trial, and the R1 refresh.

Then I think they will show the R1 software update and then say that they are going on sale the next day and all existing R1s will be able to order the new wireless charging pad and all will be getting the matching software update which will include the new artwork, the addition of satellite radio app, the infotainment/casting ability, and (fingers crossed), not android auto, but google maps.

Of course I have no idea what I'm talking about for any of this, but I do think I'm right about them waiting until Investor day at this point.
Who knows....maybe this is the point the free updates end. Refresh get new software, but legacy starts having to pay for updates?

This thread is kind of awesome, not going to lie. I'm of the entirely speculative view / hope that the next one is taking longer because it is an exception and will include some more material issues than your typical monthly OTAs. But there's a million good reasons why they may be busy with other things. Time will tell!

Everything on this thread is wild speculation so I figured I throw one out to the weeds....it is entirely possible that the free updates don't keep comming for all previously purchased vehicles....at some point, however.

That's not how things work amigo. Doesn't your iPhone continue to receive updates even when 4-5 more models are released?

The biggest software support headache is having to deal with different software versions, especially when the software has to interacting with lots of different 'physical' and 'logical' systems. Given the challenges support has today, I think it highly unlikely that this would occur any time in the near future, if at all. (Just to clarify, enabling or disabling different software capabilities within the code base, like drive modes, performance, etc., while it can be a complicating factor is nothing like having everyone out there running different versions.)

Yes....but I don't think the vehicle world follows the phone world. I hope I am wrong. Does Tesla keep sending out new software forever? Maybe they do...I haven't ever had one.

Tesla does, they are not as frequent in my 8 year old Model S and some features require newer hardware stacks to be available but they still send them out.

That is good....maybe I am wrong then and Rivian keeps updating older vehicles. I sure hope so as I want to keep mine a real long time...

I think in a recent software AMA, Wassym said that many new updates are still in the pipeline for the original R1’s. They most likely are gearing up for the next big OS refresh previewed on the R2 that was confirmed coming to the R1’s (original & refresh).

I honestly think they are late because they are working on a bigger update to roll out some post refresh updates (paid subscription services, new functionality, and possible the start to the new OS refresh). I think there is a forum thread featuring that recent AMA with Wassym this spring on the next exciting updates for ALL models
