EV woes stranded in Crane Lake Minnesota -33F

When I parked the Rivian on Friday I had 63% charge yesterday when I plugged it in it was 43%

The battery temperature is -14F. It is not accepting any charge at this time until the battery warms up… the battery warmer has it up to -12 now. Could be a few days!

Plugging into a DCFC this morning and the last few times for that matter, the outside temps in Vancouver have been 0/-3c (32F/28F) and with the battery pack around 4c, it will typically pull around 25-28kW from a DCFC until the battery hits a nominal temp of 16.6c, which typically takes around 15-18 minutes, then start accepting up to around 80+kW. Usually around 26c I believe, it will start pulling the full 500amps/pack voltage if available.

My efficiency has been around 2.0kWh/km lately but all short 12km drives with the HVAC running around 22c

Hopefully as the battery warms it will do so at a faster rate. I can see how warming that mass to operating temp could take a little time. Got to say in my 9 years of driving EV’s never read about anyone experiencing that type of cold. Good luck

Thanks for answering that for us so I don't have to. Any chance you got a photo of the gauge display? I know when I plugged in our R1S last night, it predicted being done more than a day later.

Rivian doesn't seem to know/or doesn't take into account how long it will take to warm up the battery to a reasonable level where it can actually charge at yet.

If you are at DCFC, try to turn on cabin climate. It should help, in my mind

Try turning on the onboard HVAC in heater (of course) mode to HIGH. It might help (I would hope!)

If its a Heat Pump Gen2, then turning on the heat might help. But a Heater Coil Gen1, I seriously doubt it would help.

I remember those temperatures. No thanks, I complain now when it's positive single digits.

Good info let us know at what temp it actually starts accepting a charge. Doesn't really get that cold around here but we may on occasion see -10F so would be good to know when to stick the Rivian in the garage, though not sure I want my other car outside in that weather also.

Cabin should still physically heat the battery. Power draw from battery would also help warm it up slightly.

Took my Tri in for service this morning. Minus 7F before wind chill. Preconditioned and surprisingly got 1.75 mi/kWh on the 50 mile drive to SC. Pack dropped from 54 degrees to 43. HVAC is one of the issues being serviced and it took cabin temp to 78 degrees (71 therm set on auto??) on the way which wouldn't help efficiency. Got in the gen 1 T loaner and pack was at 3 degrees. ??. You would think they would know enough to run some power through the pack before giving the vehicle out. But I thought if they don't care neither do I and took off. Threw all kinds of codes/warnings, but I just kept driving. Stayed at 60mph until pack got to 15 degrees then sped up to 65. Interstate all the way. Cruise didn't work, and pack got to 33 degrees when I got home. Plugged in and then reset vehicle when pack got to 58. All warnings cleared. I reset trip A before I left & truck said efficiency was 1.15?. That might be an exaggeration because I used exactly 50 percent of the battery to go 50 miles. Left with 88 percent charge and got home with 38. Drove in AP all the way home so all 4 motors would provide heat.

My rear motors turn off when it is cold like that, and the dash tells me i have motor faults
Speed gets limited to 42 mph . Rivian is not built for cold.

This has me really confused...

Most of the day yesterday it was -3 F. By the time I went home, it was -7 F. S sat for 11 hours while I was working, so it had plenty time to get cold and frozen. End of the day, I hopped in the S, put it in drive, no warning lights, and everything worked like normal. Battery was at 78%, and when I got home, it was at 69%. Thats even normal efficiency for me.
