Battery Report after 3 years / 50K miles (R1S Launch Edition)

Nothing has happened for us in the last year or two - had some initial teething problems with the displays - so I haven't been around much.

I was wondering what the long term reliability was like...did some thread searching...and saw battery degradation mentioned. Hadn't even thought of that, but here's what electraFi shows for me. The jump around February is when I changed the tires (pitched the old ATs and went with Michelin LTX MS/2). Hard for me to see any change.

I will agree with this assessment; after changing to Michelin, I have been getting 2.71 Miles/Kwh on conserve mode.

Here you go - sadly the "Fleet Average" doesn't display and the "Software Markers" generates an error - c'es la vie.

google says the EPA range is 315miles, but you don't even break 300. Any idea what's going on here? Do you have the lower efficiency tires installed? I am solidly getting the EPA rating out of my Lightning except on the highway, which I almost never use (drafting at 3 car lengths behind 18 wheelers works really well for extending my range on road trips). Do you just always drive at highway speeds? I'm trying to get a feel for how truthful Rivian's EPA rating is.

It’s pretty truthful… …if you know how to cut through their marketing.

OP looks to be seeing around EPA rated range for their config - 20” AT‘s on a quad gen1 large pack.

Rivian get funny by blending drive modes for their ‘headline’ figures - eg the 371 mile ‘rating’ for a gen2 tri with 22” sport is actually made up of the EPA rating of 346 miles in AP mode and the estimate of ~405 miles in conserve.

Also these reports of battery ‘health’ don’t really tell us much other than Rivian were awesome enough to bake in enough headroom to the batteries to accommodate whatever degradation has actually occurred behind the scenes. Eg a gen1 large pack is marketed at 131kWh, but actually is 141kWh gross - Rivian do some cool stuff to keep the addressable capacity as high as possible within the envelope they have marketed the pack at - they really deserve some kudos for that.

The EPA range is based on all purpose mode on the 21" Range wheels and tires. When you go to the 20" ATs that EPA range drops to ~274-289 depending on configuration. In the same manner, going to 22" on the OEM Pirelli Zeros drops it to EPA 299 miles, but going to the OEM Pirelli MS increases it to EPA 316 - even on the sport wheels.

As a point of comparison my lifetime average on my lightning was 2.1mi/kWh. My lifetime average on my R1T is currently at 2.14mi/kWh.

However, how they get it done is vastly different. At speed, and 90% highway I would see 1.6-1.8mi/kWh in my lightning. I can see 2.0mi/kWh around 55-65 but between 65-85 is where I usually travel at. I can eeek out a bit more with HVAC changes, tire pressures, appropriate preconditioning, etc. 100% to 1% I saw a maximum of 290 miles - you can find me on the lightning forums as well with this data.

On my Rivian, 300 is no sweat and I've seen 330 miles on Conserve mode at Highway speeds and will see between 2.5-3.0mi/kwh, and I've seen as high as 3.74mi/kwh depending on elevation and highway speeds in conserve. In AP mode efficiency drops 10-20%. So in AP it's not all that much different, but the ability to flip in Conserve changes it completely.

We're talking long trips, running 100% to under 5% charge with a range mindset - usually with 2+ DCFCs to get where I'm going. On shorter highway trips those numbers change drastically and can be almost identical if not lower than the Lightning depending on conditions.

Switching from AT tires to AS (or summer) tires will always give you better range, as OP's data shows. AT tires are the worst for those concerned with range.

I've got a Dual Motor large pack with 21's, EPA rating 351 miles. If I drive all side streets, which is quite often as I don't get on the freeway for my commute, I will usually get over 3 mi/kWhr, which is 400+ mile range. For freeway trips where I generally drive over 80 (closer to 85 when I can) I'll usually get about 2.3 mi/kWhr, but varies from about 2.1-2.5 (280-320 mile range). Not too bad considering I'm pushing a brick through the air at 80+ mph.

I think there are differences between G1 and G2. And it may be nuanced between highway and city.

I have G1 and I am happy with it. It's not too bad even when it's below freezing, about 250 was lowest with 75 mph freeways and mountains around Christmas time.

How did you get this report?
I'm at 105K and shows about 7% degradation.

Gen 1 R1T 21's lifetime 2.6m/kwh with about 30K and Defenders for about 1/2 the milage.
