I’d probably just use my manual tonneau cover and a bivy sack, and sleep with the tailgate down and my head under the stars. You could just use a hooped bivy without the tonneau.

The downside for a bed tent and roof top tent is your truck isn’t drivable went the tent is set up. That is a hassle when on a multi-day trip and you want to explore something too far away to walk.
I was concerned about that when I got my tent, but in practice it's less than 5 minutes to fold it up and go. It would take me way longer to breakdown a ground tent, and I really don't want to leave my tent or anything else unattended at a campsite. Sleeping in the bed isn't an option for me because that's where all my camp gear is (fridge, kitchen, etc.).

It’s great to actually see it on an R1T! What size did you order? Thanks
I had the 5-5.2 ft aluminum rods. I have been through a couple of rain and wind storms with it too. The back end does create a trough since the flap can’t overlap the non-existent gap between the bed and cab. You can use a pool noodle on the inside so it doesn’t create that trough.
I tried other tents that just sit in the bed and they are too flimsy.
Once this tent is up, your truck is stuck, but just undo the poles at the ends and collapse it into the bed and close the tonneau cover and your on your way for your day trip or on to your next destination.
Feel free to ask me anymore questions.

The “Air Cruiser” is a great tent. Built very well with HD zippers, double sealed seams, roof curtains over the skylights, , screened and paneled on all four sides, set up over the bed is how I use it. it is one of the smallest and lightest yet (under 100lbs) has 50% more head room (54”) and sets it self up faster than I can make a margarita. It comes with dimming internal led lights and 2x hanging bags for your boots as you climb in. Also the tent is tight so little noise from flapping fabric, Do yourself a favor a check one out before you buy. Usually around $2,400 and I have set it up on the ground as well.

Second this: try just the tonneau cover. If weather comes, and you're short, close it and lay corner to corner.

Downside: all your stuff you transport in the bed needs a place when you're sleeping in there.

I've got a Thule Approach M that fits perfectly. Setup and takedown time are about ~2 mins for each, so super fast. I got it through a crazy deal at work ($800) so I didn't even do much research beyond ensuring it would fit. I've never had a different RTT but I don't have any complaints with this except that walking up the ladder barefoot is excruciating because of the angle of the rungs. That being said, I've only ever heard of one other company that makes angled rungs on their RTT ladders, so I don't think you can knock Thule for that one.

The roof top tents have their advantages and disadvantages. Yours does look great. However, I'm only looking for the best truck bed tent (could double as a ground tent if necessary) at this time for my limited needs and budget.

Ah, I missed the nuance of a truck bed tent that's not mounted in my first read through. Sorry about that, good luck with your search.

I went with a full size air bed 14” model; plugs right into the bed for easy set up and take down and a pop up awning over the bed. Was a great set up and way better than strapping a confining tent not made for the truck… you can add a cheap mesh bug net to the canopy if needed!

That’s a cool idea! A 10X10 pop up canopy would probably work great.

Hey guys, I'm looking for some feedback on bed tents that work well and best fit the dimensions of our R1T. Please don't say buy a RTT. I just want something that fits my budget and will get occasional use.
Thanks!
Check out the Napier Sportz or Rightline Gear truck tents. Both fit the R1T pretty well and won’t break the bank.

The more I look into the C6 Rev the more I like it. Now if there is a bed rack that is level with spoiler and doesn’t cost arm and a leg… For mounting the C6 sideways (perpendicular) to the truck, is the folding Platform X a must? Or is the tent floor rigid enough on its own?
