Maybe An unusual question, but what’s the best way to discharge the high voltage battery?

I charged over night to 100% in preparation for a long and very cold trip this morning. However, we’ve needed to cancel the trip last minute. I know the OG batteries don’t like sitting at full charge for very long. I’d rather not just drive around aimlessly to use up the extra energy, so am looking for ideas on how to get the charge level down a bit. So far, the only ideas I have are turning the climate control to maximum and minimum repeatedly, and fastening the seatbelts so that it doesn’t go to sleep.

Any other ideas you might have?

It’s fine sitting at full charge. It’s just recommended not to charge to 100% routinely. The battery will begin to discharge on its own through parasitic drain. Adding we have a heavy snow storm occurring and I am charging my T to 100% now just in case I need the inverter to run appliances if power goes out.

Plug in all your phones, charge up your power tool batteries, Margarita machine, TV to watch the college football games or even a Nespresso coffee machine on tailgate while you wash and detail the R1T.

V2H would be nice...

Get an appropriately rated extension cord and plug in a space heater to heat your house.

It won't be the most efficient heating you can get, but at least the energy will go to something productive.

Just be careful on the extension cord. Many aren't rated for 1,500W constant draw.

This, and/or run the heater with the windows open a crack.

Fastest: drive it
Second fastest: turn HVAC on with windows open, assuming you are in a garage.
Using 120V outlets will help too.

I wouldn't stress about this, @cohall, especially in Colorado in the late fall when warm battery temperatures aren't likely to combine with 100% SoC to amplify long-term battery problems.

I'm with @ebellinder2 -- I think this is small stuff.

You sound very conscientious about battery protection (maybe we could buy your Rivian when you're done with it?) -- but our vehicles serve us, we don't serve them.

Drive it when you're ready to drive it. Or do something else that drains the battery. But please don't think you have to do anything.

Very best wishes!
