My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
There's been a lot of talk about what has improved over the Gen1 R1 vehicles in the refresh. I'm curious to know what people are considering a downgrade in specific things that have been changed.

So far I'm of the opinion that the upcoming Large battery pack capacity is probably the biggest downgrade. Only thing that would change my mind here is if it's verified to be a software locked Max pack, since it would theoretically road trip fairly similarly. The charging curves would be exaggerated, and you save a decent chunk of money over the Max.
Lack of Compass Yellow.

Then … No fog lights?

Wouldn't all this extra voltage take a lot more in costs? Home charging isn't passing level 2 anytime soon so all of this extra cost would just be to appease the infrequent fast charge?
Agreed. I believe RJ said the R2 will be 400V for cost reasons. They already have their architecture built for 400V and it's expected to be shared with R2 and R3. So, expect 400V for a while. Which seems like it's mostly going to be a few minutes slower per stop for the impatient travelers.

I don't like that they shrank the Standard and Large batteries. While the vehicle is more efficient, which is great, the RTT, trailer, campsite electronics or canoe aren't more efficient.
And it's more expensive. If the Large pack is a software limited max, then that might be the way to justify it for me.

And if TM is replacing QM, why is it way more expensive?

Their attempt at going up market may work in the short term, but I wonder how the used vehicle prices will fair. This update certainly makes the EV9 more attractive.

Many of the complaints I feel are comparing it to the gen1. And I suspect those that are just coming to Rivian may not feel the same, as they may not have known the large pack used to be 20kwh bigger. Having the Large in about the middle between Standard and Max makes sense. But, the max pack always seemed like it was too much $$, and now they've moved everything in that direction.

Felt like they couldn't improve the max pack so decided to save costs on the Large to create the necessary gaps. I didn't get the max because of the paltry increase from Large for an absurd amount of money.

Is the battery chemistry different? If you can charge the new large to 100% then while smaller in overall capacity it might still be more practical.

Biggest downgrade would be the $$$!! Otherwise, it's a huge win for everyone ?
Even that isn’t a downgrade to me. Pay more to get more makes the Gen 1 and Gen 2 a very similar value to me, even if the costs are different.

The price hike is pretty large. Which is what it is. They need to make money and I’m fine with that. But with an optioned out Tri motor around 115k and then the quad probably at 125k, to not have soft close doors is beyond me and ridiculous.

I think the loss in right height is the larger bump under the rear motor. They need clearance for something more than with the Bosch motors. I wonder if some of the water fording loss is from the heat pump location maybe needing ventilation or something. Just a guess.

I think the biggest downgrade for me is price. I like the push button for the doors, wish I could upgrade that one. I hate where the door release is now. Stereo may be the only other downgrade for me. Oh and one more thing, Apple CarPlay.

I understand why Teslas have the unlock button due to their frameless windows
I’ve never understood that argument. Frameless windows far pre-date electronic door releases. Many cars quickly pop the window down slightly as soon as the handle is pulled.

Don't forget the QM comes with the cool Gary with hair all blowing back as biggest reason to go TM up to QM...
Will I be exiled if I say gear guard badge on the quad is the biggest downgrade? Looks bad to me…

The way Tesla does it the window seals up into a peice of weatherstripping in a way that (when built well) gives better NVH performance. Frameless windows are prone to wind noise depending on design otherwise.

I totally agree. The upgrades for the price are massive, and I feel it's still underrated. As more time passes, we'll see even greater differences and advantages between Gen 1 and Gen 2 in terms of reliability, performance, and efficiency. It's all about longevity and value.

And if you use the manual release levers in the Tesla, it does the window thing anyway. But yeah, I really miss the button open from our Tesla. Door handles? So 1990.

I eliminated the door seal wind noise on mine using the typical recommendations from a couple of threads about it here.
