That's part of the battery heating system. The truck runs the motors hot and then uses the waste heat to heat the battery. That's completely normal, and by design, if you watched it long enough, the heat would dissipate quickly.
Ah cool!!

Do the motors really get this hot on a rapid charge?

They heat up like this when your pack is cold to dump heat into it so that it can charge quicker. You’ll notice the motors come down in temp a few minutes into DCFC in cool temps. This happens once the pack is up to a more ideal temp.

I'm also a new (Used) R1T Launch owner and I was at first alarmed that the motors were getting "Orange".

But the last time this happened, it was cold out (35 degrees) but my battery was 72 degrees because I was level 2 charging 45 minutes earlier.

When the motors started heating up (All 4 motors, despite me being in Conserve mode), I did NOT get the "Preconditioning" message and when I arrived to the charger, the battery temp ticket up only to 73 degrees.

So my question is why wouldn't I get a preconditioning message and only see it go from 72 degrees to 73 degrees?

Thanks

Congrats!

I got mine used too, right after the quads became unavailable to make room for the G2s. Resale low mileage was perfect for me.

Congrats again.

I have never seen my motors get that hot ever.

wth were you doing?
Yes, the motors are a heat sink so the when fast charging, the truck will transfer heat from the battery to the motors to maintain the optimal temp. For the batteries, around 80 degrees

Makes sense why I've never seen it then. I'm in Texas where 50 degrees F is considered 'cold' lol.

It's possible you'd see it. If your battery were cold-soaked and sitting at 50 degrees while you're trying to make a long-distance trip, and are on the way to a fast charger, you'd have that.

Same here in Arizona. Never got my motors over 250F. And I only got to 250 after a few hard pulls back to back.

I want more facts, does the system actually heat the motors to heat the battery?
It puts a load on the motors and that draws a lot of current from the battery, which in turn heats up the motors and the batteries.

Yes. More accurately they allow heat to build up purposefully in order to use that heat to heat the battery.

Not sure it actually puts a load on them. I am not an electrical engineer but I understand that they send a lossy waveform somehow to the motors which actually gets them to get hot without actually delivering any torque.

Service center told me that people are dumping the quads for the new trimotor. I wish I could have the new quad motor.

I honestly can't understand why.
