I still wave as well - have seen the R1S population grow over the past year here in south NJ, as well as a couple more R1T's, but it's still relatively small (less than 10 "usuals" in my neighborhood). I'd say I get a response about 60 - 70% of the time.

This was one of the things I loved about coming over to the Rivian community in that it felt a lot like the early Tesla days up until 2019 or so when the Model 3 ramp went into high gear. I fully expect this to go away when R2 comes out, but perhaps we can keep it rolling for awhile yet. It's definitely tied to the fact that if you have an R1 now you're more likely to identify with the brand and have more passion about the brand than someone who just bought a car based on price/features/advertising/etc.

SoCal here... I'll throw a "Shaka" to other Rivian drivers when I see them. Most people understand the gesture, it would seem.

Note that as a previous owner of a Jeep, where this whole "waving" business started (and i guess with motorcycles - which i also ride), the reason for the waving is not why you would want to be waving in a Rivian. Really all those Jeep wavers are saying to each other "Yes, i never take my vehicle off road either, but we both look cool, even though we both know we're driving a vehicle that will break down more (and cost more to maintain) than pretty much any other vehicle on the road"! Its basically a "sympathy" wave...i see you, and i feel your pain....:)

Motorcycles on the other hand are just saying "Yes, we are way cooler than everyone else..."

Pretty sparse here in Maine, so we flash lights at each other pretty often.

I don’t have a Rivian yet but I already wave at all the Rivians I see!!
Some enthusiastic CR-V driver was frantically waving and flashing their lights at me like we were long-lost friends. I wasn't sure if my vehicle was spontaneously combusting, if I was about to meet my doom in a speed trap, or if they'd simply consumed their body weight in sugar and needed to express their newfound energy somehow.

I always flash my lights at oncoming Rivians, and I usually get a wave in return.

And a celebration of being alive, still?
Indeed. One should celebrate being alive every morning when you wake up. No day is guaranteed. And hopefully driving EVs is doing a small part to make sure our kids have a better and longer life down the road.

To be clear, I will be waving at every Rivian I see, just to celebrate being in an ev, supporting an “Mericun” auto company, taking a risk on a new company trying to help us all save the planet, to remind each other than we are not driving Teslas, and to celebrate being alive and sharing that joy with another driver. If they don’t wave back, nothing lost!

I love this thread and I love this post. We have an R1S and a Jeep in the garage. There are about 6 R1S and 1 R1T on our court and the adjacent street. We do not waive at each other. The Jeep is my dad's, we just had a new engine dropped in it last year, the transmission needed repair this year along with the A/C. He waives at every other Jeep he sees on the road.

I'm in Western NC, and see about 1 Rivian a week. I always want to wave and/or flash but the roads are so curvy there is rarely enough time for me to react. So don't take offense if you see a silver Rivian and don't get a wave.

I'm always excited to see one, and we even have a service center in nearby Greeneville SC now.

With a Jeep its certainly a sympathy wave, but its also an acknowledgement that we're Jeep people despite it. Like sure its eventually going to leak when it rains out, but I still love it.

I sold my Jeep awhile back but I still miss it.

With Motorcycles I assumed its because life is short and you gotta wave when you still have an arm to wave with.

Or maybe its a "Yeah, we know riding this in the era of human zombies is crazy but we're not going to give up"
