I've always just locked the R1 before washing at home - seems easier than remembering carwash mode.
Car wash mode does a few things

- Disables the charge port touch sensor
- Disables the automatic wipers
- Changes the HVAC to recirculate to prevent ingress (pretty sure that's the behavior I've observed)
- Retracts door handles to prevent them catching on machinery etc

There are times where I've left it out of CW mode so I can clean the door handles etc but usually just shut down the HVAC and wipers. All that said, I only use manual car washes. I don't trust autowashes at all.

This is why I just lock :) It does all those things as well - though I do get that for folks that have proximity unlocking turned on at home it won't work.

I agree this seems like pure coincidence. Car wash mode doesn't effect screens, safety sensors, etc. Purely disables the door handles and charge port door.
OP is thinking that because he didn't use carwash mode that the charge port opened and water got inside as he was washing the car.

Yes, I understand that. But water getting in with the charge port door wouldnt make sense unless he was directly spraying it. The doors stay open and rain water gets in there all the time.

When you are in car wash mode a little rubber duckie shows up on the hood of your vehicle on your phone display.
