I was playing around with the idea of replacing our Chargepoint cable with the NACS retrofit: https://store.chargepoint.com/product/nacs-cable-kit. But I noticed something odd. We'll still have our J1772 with the truck, so I went looking at adapters. And I'm trying to figure out why there is such a price discrepancy between J1772 to NACS being significantly less expensive than NACS to J1772? I can't imagine it only has to do with the locking lever mechanism. I'm figuring with tax this makes this an almost $500 affair. Basically spending $500 or so just to be able to push the button on the NACS adapter instead of fumbling with the app. I've pretty much decided it's not worth it for me, but I am wondering why there is such a price difference.

My opinion; because Tesla used to include an adapter with each car they sold for free. I don't think that they do it anymore, but you could check what it costs on their site.

It's pure capitalism. Tesla sells the J1772 to NACS adapter for $50 so third parties have to undercut that. No one sells a NACS to J1772 except third parties so they can rake you over the coals.

It's the same materials, the same internals. Chinese knock-offs on Amazon for $40 all day. It's just the "name brand" third parties that are happy to part a fool with his money in the absence of other "name brand" competition.

Probably because they're new. As you mentioned, there's nothing really special about the adapters.

I picked up one of these for $50. Construction feels on par with my J1772 >> NACS adapter from Tesla, and I have used it a few times so far @ 40A, including a 6 hour session this morning:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJXDGW1J

Some of the adapters may have a cord, lock, or other little feature/design change that may affect their price a bit, but I don't think there's any reason to spend over $100 on one.

For the OP, I am curious how you arrived at almost $500 for the new cord + adapter. Seems like you'd be able to get out for under $300. And why would you consider replacing the cord at all?

I'm not going to buy an adapter from some unknown company and risk starting a wildfire in California. I can't take that kind of liability risk. Ask PG&E how I know.

When I bought a replacement chargepoint cable from them it was about $110 and I could choose J1772 or NACS as they have both. I chose J1772 but I'm sure in the next Decade I'll chose NACS.

Not sure I understand your motivation here. Why would you have to fumble with an app to charge your Rivian at home? Just plug it in, same as you would with your Tesla.

$299 for the cable $134 for the NACS to J1772 adapter plust 10% tax (California of course) would make it around $476

Sorry wasn't clear I'm fumbling with the app to charge the Tesla since I have to open it, let it wake up, push the button to open the charge port and then insert it with the Tesla adapter. With the other cable I can just push the little button on the top of the NACS. Totally a first world problem

I'm not sure if the R2 will allow NACS push button opening, for all I know it may not.

Does the push-button opening on a Tesla work even when the vehicle is locked? That seems wrong.

Looks like the cable is $199:

At any rate, just tap the charging port door with your finger. It'll open if the car is unlocked. This is what I did at public J1772 stations and when the button on my gen1 Tesla UMC finally failed and no longer opened the port for me.

Yes, the button on the Tesla wand will open the charge port on a locked car. It can be used to "assist" people who have forgotten to plug in their car at a supercharger. You cannot, however, unplug a locked car, and the charge port will not open with your finger if the car is locked.

I charge my Tesla with my j1772 eve and the Tesla adaptor. Couldn’t be easier. Yes, I open the charging door with the app. I’m 77 and even I don’t fumble.

My NACS to J1772 was $50 on Amazon. There's no magic here, buy whatever is cheap.

Decided to look after seeing your post. For anyone with an OpenEVSE they are now offering a replacement cable for NACS at $209 to upgrade an existing unit. If I'm still using mine when I get a vehicle with a NACS port I may do that upgrade.

I could have sworn that it was $299, but even ~$350 is too rich to get a connivence button.

Yea totally a first world problem here. I don't think I'll be considering this unless prices come down a bit. Or I get an actual problem with my cable.

I would rather go with a name brand since there is so many amperage going through these things. But noted.
