Charging the Large Battery Pack to 100% ?

If the new "Large" battery pack option is actually the "Max" battery option with a software limit, can you charge regularly to 100%, since the batteries are actually not full because of the software capping the charge of the batteries

It depends. If rivian limits the voltage at the top end, then yes. Charging to 100% on a software-limited large would only be 3.9 or 4.0V per cell and would be similar to 80% on a full max pack. Those voltages wouldn’t do any significant long term harm to the battery.

If they limit the voltage at the bottom, then 100% on the software-limited battery is 4.2V per cell, exactly the same as a regular large (or max). That voltage long term will harm the battery’s longevity.

If they limit it some on the top and bottom end, then who knows unless you know the exact limits and voltages.

Not sure how you’d extract that info from Rivian and/or the vehicle itself.

Thanks, I will ask them when I pick it up. Who knows if they will tell me. If they limit at the top end, then the probably don't want you to know that. If that was the case, and you can regularly charge to 100% without harming the longevity of the battery, then people would be much less likely to purchase the upgrade to increase capacity.

You would be able to tell once you charge it. My Model S was a software limited 60 kWh, it was really a 75 kWh battery, Tesla later let us unlock them and rebadge the car for 2k. When charging to 100% before it was unlocked the charge curve was really good and did not drop off much. If the battery is not software locked the charge from 90% to 100% is very slow.

I would say an awesome charge curve would strongly suggest being software-restricted and top-limited, but an average or poor one might not be telling of the opposite as Rivian could artificially hinder the charge curve with part of their programming.
