The electrical switch contact is what it sounds like but what kind of switch would make such a loud contact sound?
Who knows. But isn't there a contactor associated with the HV pack?

Yeah, that's was my first thought. I didn't want to be alarmist and shout fire in a crowded forum when that is, after all, just a guess.

But the main things are:
  • This isn't normal at all - it needs a SC visit.
  • The OP already has it in for service. Speculating is a waste of time.
Although I guess we could place bets on what it will turn out to be ...

Yep. That's a large device, not the shutters. To me, it sounds exactly like an electrical contactor - I've heard them hundreds of times over the years in my work.

An educated but still a WAG (Wild Ass Guess) - it's acting like chatter that occurs when a relay/contactor has low coil voltage. The relay/contactor pulls in, the power drain drops the voltage and the relay drops out. Then the voltage recovers and the relay pulls in again. Rinse and repeat. Could be a 12V battery issue or a bad contactor.

This def needs service.

The end of the week and still no answer or idea yet other than random questions from the SC trying to figure out what it is. I leave for a business trip Tuesday for the week and I cannot imagine it will be resolved by then.

The Portland SC has done a great job communicating and gave me a loaner for the weekend. It’s the best they can do other than I need to tow my dump trailer for a yard project and that will have to wait as loaners are prohibited from towing I was told.

I will update the forum once it’s settled whatever it is.

Are they able to reproduce it at the SC?

They said they did but haven’t been able to predictably reproduce which has led to the challenge of it.

The latest update is the SC misspoke and has not been able to duplicate it. Their lead technician looked at the contactor and relay at the timestamp of my video and the car didn’t report anything out of the ordinary.

Sounds like there aren’t any error logs and they are trying to determine when it happens. It’s always been asleep and trying to wake up but sometimes will happen often but then went 1+ months with nothing to the point I assumed it was a bug fixed with an update. My only other consistency is there is an increased delay before the drive or reverse will engage when it’s happening. It’s clearly in some kind of start up sequence that is getting hung up.

The latest update is the SC was not able to reproduce the issue and it didn’t show any error codes so they delivered it back to my house since I’m out of town.

I was told how to run a diagnostic capture when it happens again and to record a time stamp of when it happened so they can further assess.

The SC has been great and I’m confident this will eventually get resolved. My hope is it doesn’t mean I’m stranded somewhere as a result or after my warranty expires in 15k miles. As I know more I’ll update the forum so others can learn.

Thanks for reporting back. If it does happen again, hopefuly it will show up on a diagnostics capture.
