If the glass is so easily damaged and they were concerned about cost/weight I wonder why they didn’t go with some type of plastic instead.

I wish someone manufactured a fiberglass panel which is the same size and shape as the roof glass, painted gloss black or white (for hot climates) on the outside with some sound deadening thermal insulation and headliner material on the inside. If anything happened to my roof glass after I get my Rivian I’d gladly pay for that Instead of another piece of fragile glass.

I wonder how the roof glass holds up with heavy snow on it. I don't plan on leaving my truck in the garage but this thread has me little worry now LOL.

For what it's worth, snow would be dispersed across the entirety of the roof. chances of it breaking would be near zero.
Glass in most situations isn't going to hold up to a point load situation away from a supported edge. That being said, i would hope it holds up to a chestnut falling from a tree, but who knows?

We have been told multiple times by forum members who have friends, acquaintances, etc... that work for Rivian that the company monitors this forum. Hopefully this thread will initiate some sort of action by Rivian to re-visit the glass roof design. I know adding weight to an existing design is generally a last ditch resort to solve a problem, but it may be adding thickness to the glass could be the most practical remedy.

I cracked my pano roof during a carwash as well. I was washing it when I stood up on my crossbar, placed my left hand on the roof, leaned forward to wash the front and “CRACK” it went. Pushed back with my right hand and there they were, 2 impact points from my hands. I contacted my guide immediately who called me and made sure I was ok then I opened a service ticket. It took almost 4 weeks to set up an appointment and now I’ve been waiting for 2 weeks for one more part.
Initially it was to be covered under warranty then they called and said it wasn't a warranty issue. $1881 cost so I had to make a claim. The pano roof is definitely not nearly as dense as the other windows.

Seems fragile... Sure hope it doesn't crack if I put my coffee cup up there by mistake. It is 20oz after all.

In all seriousness, you weigh what 210-220... There's enough smart people on here who could figure out what weight and load your hand out on that spot. Seems way too fragile

Looks like mine will be covered under warrantee, as it should since I didn’t do anything to cause it.

Got the truck serviced today. Dropped off at 9:00am, ready at 3:00pm. Was offered Lyft credit or rental car. Not a word of discussion about whether this was a warrantee item. They fixed it at no cost to me, no questions asked. Service Center folks were awesome. ?

Totally agree. I was standing on a ladder and a small weight by my elbow rest cracked it.

That stinks. Putting a hand or elbow on the roof shouldn't get even close to cracking it. There were plenty of people in the other thread about the roof cracking arguing that sitting on it is excessive and could cause damage but I don't see how your situation is reasonable. I've leaned on the glass roof and massive windshield of my Model X plenty of times while washing it and it never occurred to me that I was at risk of cracking the glass. I hope Rivian can source some stronger roof glass. I can't believe they made you pay for the replacement!

Could not agree more. It is one of the reasons why I got the cracked glass back with me and its sitting in my backyard. To submit to NHSTA for testing if needed since I have filed a complaint. If something like this happens again (if a bird poops and if it cracks the glass :)) then I will take the glass I have to a shower glass door company and have them build a custom glass for me with the exact dimensions or maybe someone has a better idea where to get one build

Is the glass completely flat?
If so, it would be stupid cheap and quick to get what I bet would be a better quality piece from our local glass shop.

I was just looking at my roof and it appears to be curved pretty significantly at the corners.

From what I've seen (and experienced) I think Rivian got a bad batch of roof glass from the supplier and the trucks that were unlucky enough to have that batch are having significant issues. I think if it was a design issue or just poor quality that we would be seeing a lot more instances of cracking from the 10,000 or so trucks that are out there on the road right now, especially with a lot of the use cases that already exist.

FWIW, I gave my R1T its first bath over the weekend and while cleaning the roof glass was very careful to only brace myself on the cargo bar mounts in fear of cracking the glass. I did tap on the glass with my finger in different areas to try and get an idea of its thickness and structure. It seems to be relatively thin glass for the large area that it covers.

Why aren't we asking what the vin numbers are of the trucks with the cracked glass? We have the power to figure out is this a batch problem or not.
