Whether tipping is normal or not, I’d DEFINITELY tip any tech who could get the rattle out of my passenger seat!!!

I bet you also complain when companies charge "too much" for their products and services
If I know what the fee is I either accept it and pay or get something else. It isn't that hard. I don't feel the need to pay additional every time I talk to or interact with someone.

Sorry, the way it came across was suggesting that those that don't like tipping are cheap in general.
For sure, more that there is a disconnect in the conversation regarding tipping, cost of goods, prices, etc.

Can't let this one go :)

Should the Rivian Tech tip the vehicle owner in appreciation of supporting the company that created his/her job?

Some skilled people are appreciative of a tip. Some skilled people take it as a reminder a class divide.

I had a great longtime relationship with my plumber as we shared an interest in building sciences. That relationship changed the day I asked him if his bright teenage son was considering plumbing as a career. While I believe plumber is a better career than many office jobs, I inadvertently signaled a class difference in our relationship.

There are plenty of more meaningful ways to rid oneself of excess cash:

Edit: another option is to send a note of Job Well Done to Rivian that names the service techs that worked with you. These typically get acknowledged and mean something to the crew.
+1. I agree this is something we don't enough of in general, partly because we 'pay' for a service so we just expect. Going the extra mile to call out folks who've really put in the effort to give you a decent experience should be done more often. I also quite like the gift card thing (it's kind of like a reverse of them sending us swag out of the blue). A little thing that lifts up your day.

I'm from the UK, so to me the whole tipping with cash culture is way out whack. Just pay your staff properly! Why should I be made to feel guilty for not tipping someone 20% just for reaching under the counter to get my muffin. How are you going above and beyond here??

To me It really depends on what was done, and if it was a curtesy or not. There are times someone goes truly beyond and I'll add a little something. There are other times when, well, it was their job and they are getting paid for it.

However sending the company a thank you note naming a person is a great idea too I hadn't considered.

I stop going to Starbucks ever since they introduced the tip function, especially in drive through. Just absolutely hate to be forcibly cornered into a condescending position by giving my hard earned money away like this.

Cookies/Brownies/etc are things I think are acceptable. Additionally I think it is appropriate to call out above and beyond performance with an email to Tony to help them to get recognition from their supervisors.

Had mobile service a few times and didn't tip. It was unnecessary. They preformed there job and got paid for it. Tipping as a default for any job now is a bit much

In my opinion, tipping people outside the normal industry expectations (restaurants, bars, valets, etc), is less about the money and more about acknowledging that you appreciate the service they provide. I believe the automotive service industry falls within this category.

This is why a nominal gift card, donuts, or thank you card (with copy to Corporation) can be very meaningful to people that don't expect them. YMMV but it certainly brightens someone else's day and pays dividends in future good will.

Seriously just curious...but in a case like that,,do you tip just the tech or also the service adviser? Or one tip and ask them to split?

I ask the service writer who did the work... I tip the mechanic that performed the service, usually just $20.

I usually give the tire guy at BJ's $20 when he does our free rotations, not because the service was free.. but that job is kind of nasty work.
