I am not concerned about actually *driving* it prior to buying. I am more concerned with comfort of the seats and headroom (i'm 6'3") and visibility out the back. But even that I am not so worried about I won't proceed with delivery and just sit in it before I sign.

Getting into/out of my model 3 is low and awkward, but I have enough leg/head room so I can't imagine the R1T/R1S will be a problem. Dimension wise - the R1S is pretty similar to our 2015 Honda Pilot. Including the shape, which has been fine for visibility out the back windows. Which is more than I can say for many new "SUVs" that have sloped backs.

I was able to test drive, but honestly, I don't feel like I learned anything new. While I was happy to be able to test drive first, I don't think I would have had an issue taking delivery without one. It sits high up like I expected, the interior is nice like I expected, it pulls hard like I expected, it feel like any other nice car. A tesla with a yoke however I need to test drive before buying as I have no basis for how it feels. All the info I needed to make a call on the Rivian I was able to get at my computer...

GM dealer wouldn't let me test drive the hummer without signing either.
Back in the day(2016) when I was picking up my ModelX, Tesla delivery team had let me drive it first to my satisfaction ( around the SC) before signing on the dotted line.. this won't be my first time picking up a vehicle without test drive nor will it be my last :)... like I said in the post, just sharing the info...

Yeah exactly on point, with R1S especially.
If it's a family hauler like for me, it would help to get a feel for seats and interior.

Didn't test drive my Model Y, so I'm ok not test driving R1T before getting it, or test driving F150 Lightning first if I end up getting that first.

For me it just comes back to the fact that there are 8+ R1Ts sitting a few miles from me. Why can't I drive one for 15 minutes? I can go to the Aston Martin dealership and they'll toss me the keys, but even with an 01/19 deposit I can't get in a Rivian?

I get not doing the mobile test drives, but they have service centers active. Let people with very soon delivery windows schedule a time to go to a service center and hop in.

It's bizarre to me.
Not just an 01/19 deposit, but an 01/09 $1000 deposit.

You won't get that on a test drive. I used to get Toyota priuses for work rental cars during business trips. I only learned how bad those seats were at the 2.5 hour mark vs my then-Volvo seats. Some things require the longer drive to validate.

I agree that u won't get a proper understanding from test drive which is why I said "feel".

Opinions and thought process vary from person to person, Let's just leave it at that ?

They gave me an option in Seattle to do a first drive. Rivian employee brought an R1T to my house last Saturday afternoon and took me and my wife for a 45 minute drive. After the week Rivian had, I was prepared to be disappointed. But the Rivian employee knew the truck, was candid about what he liked and didn't like, and gave one of the best vehicle test drives I have ever taken. I walked away counting the days/weeks/months(?) until mine arrives.

Preorder MaxPack since 1/4/20. They brought me a LE R1T two weeks ago for a 45 minute walk around and test drive. It beat my already high expectations. The screen is eerily similar to Tesla so piece of cake for me to navigate quickly. Visibility was fantastic, particularly rear view. Drive and handling was tight and smooth. More excited than ever. But I have to wait until at least 2023 for the MaxPack. I hope they have good production news tomorrow. It will be worth the price and the wait. My suggestion is to take the $15,000 they just gave us back from the price increase debacle and invest it at $40/share. Your truck will be free in a few years.

I understand your concern but every single person I've seen or heard from who has driven it falls in love. And with the pre-order pricing, you could test drive it for a few days or even a year and then turn around and sell it for a $15k profit if you really don't like it.
I am hoping I will get some sort of a test drive of the R1S prior to my 1H2023 delivery. If my spouse ends up really hating it if we were to take delivery prior without one, I think reselling would likely be a better option than returning.

I have to admit a test drive probably wouldn't change my mind to purchase, unless something was mechanically (or software) wrong with it. A 15-30 minute drive I would still be trying to get used to everything. As others have said, I would want to sit inside first and make sure I was comfortable (I don't see why I wouldn't be). Plenty of videos these days to see details about most vehicles these days before getting delivery. If someone was getting a R1S I could under want a little longer to look at it since there are no details as of yet/getting in and out of the 3rd row.
