Where the battery isn't warm enough to accept the full charging rate.

It seems to have cold gated quite hard after driving all day. Interestingly it said "battery conditionoing" while it was charging and the speeds were drastically reducing. He plugged in at 2%, and pulled like 130kw immediately, it ramped up to about 140 at 20%, and then it dropped below 80kw at about 40%.

@fastwheels did you ever see it pop up with a little text above the red line that says battery conditioning?

Yeah, I think that when folks are seeing the battery to drop down off suddenly it's too cold. Kyle was able to yo-yo into a charger at about 47% with a relatively smooth taper.

Do you think it is too cold or too hot? I would imagine charging the batteries would provide sufficient heat at the high amperage.

In case you are curious,

KW is energy being delivered by the charger into the battery at any given time
KWh is the total energy delivered/expended over a 1-hour period.
Electric Energy (in KW) = {Voltage (V) * Current (I)} / 1000

So, if the charger delivered an average rate of 100KW over 1 hour,
the charger delivered = 100KW * 1h = 100KWh of energy.

If the charger delivered at an average rate of 100KW in 15 minutes,
the total energy delivered is = (100KW X (15/60)h) = 25 KWh

So, if the charger delivered a constant rate of 400A @400V over 15 minutes the total energy delivered would be = 400A x 400V x (15/60) = 160KW x (15/60)h = 40KWh

I am basing these calculations in ideal conditions

If you already know this, feel free to ignore.

Someone please correct my math and definition if I made a mistake.
It has been a while since I did my power physics.
kW is not energy, it's power. kWh is energy though.

Great info. Thanks @fastwheels

Hopefully they have a solution for this sooner vs later.
Perhaps the bright side to having a delivery window-R1S-second half 2023 is that these problems may be worked by then. But, as I live in SoCal, battery warming should not be an issue.

Too cold. He noted that the AC wasn't running, and it was cold(ish) outside. I would have thought the same as you, but it just wasn't heating it up enough. Or at least that's what it seemed like. Even with having driven it basically all day.

If they don't get preconditioning working, this thing is definitely going to struggle on road trips in the winter.

But the AC not running could be the cause of the issue as well. You're assuming they don't have a bug with running the AC in the cold.

Finding a 100ish kw charger could allow for testing. See if the drop off occurs before the 60% or after.

Agreed. He did say or kicked on during another session though.

I am in the same approximate delivery window for my R1T and I really believe you are right and they will have things like this worked out by then. On the other hand there will probably be some other issues that come up later. We are all early adopters with a new brand.
