Future R2
.
I'm sure Volvo will get there with its software, sounds like the EX60 is going to be very competitive. I could care less about USA brands, we live in a global interconnected economy it all equals out. Plus Volvo and many other "import" brands have factories right here in the States.

I'm still sticking with purchasing the R2, because I love the product and company culture. Now if I can hold out for the tri motor or pull the trigger on a launch edition....

I understand and get the variation in demand. I guess the point I did not make well is having the plan used by some others (Mach E, for example) of a standard battery, smaller, lighter, potentially safer due to chemistry, while also providing a friendlier entry price point while the long range battery option is also offered. Only having one battery with its compromises in the never-ending race to the top to advertise range misses the mark for other potential buyers.
I understand good that both BMW and Volvo will offer smaller batteries for their RWD model (much as I expect Rivian will). So a win-win.

They quoted on their press release (available to all https://www.volvocars.com/mt/news/articles/ex60-long-range-fast-charging/) a 800 km plus range (very similar to the BMW iX3). We know WLTP is more optimistic (less realistic) than the EPA. Going off what BMW quotes then a 400 (plus/minus) range is feasible.
No need to be snide.

Whether you or I want or need 400 mile range is irrelevant since if Rivian goes into the $55-60k with substantially slower charging and a smaller range (unknown currently) then the will be at a disadvantaged, especially against premium brands,
Dude, I was talking about Rivian hasn't come out with their official numbers. I was not arguing the Volvo numbers. Rivian has yet to come out with official specs for the R2.

And people will buy what they feel is worth the price. If I think Rivian is worth that money, I will buy it as will others. Just watched a podcast about the issue with 3 big EV influencers and they also think there is more R2 hype than those cars. People will buy what they buy. At the 45-60k price point, everyone is competition. Tesla, Kia, Nissan, Lexus, Toyota, everyone as almost all of them have a car at the 55k price point. If it doesn't do well, they'll adjust accordingly.

Dude thanks for clarifying.
I was interested to see the new Subaru Trailseeker which is dual motor, mid 4 second acceleration, nice wagon style starts at $40k and not the estimated $45k. Shame it doesn’t do true one pedal driving but otherwise a reasonable price, range, power and space combination.

Model 3, Model Y
id say the majority of r2 customers will be cross shopping against the model y. most would want similar range at a similar price. model y alone still has around one third of the entire us ev market. therefore rivian should price r2 very similarly to model y, within a couple of thousand bucks, but too much more then they will likely just go back to the model y.

more than half of all the households in my neighborhood have at least one tesla. no one really considers any other ev brand. most of these people dont care about the politics, they just want good range and good tech at a great price, which tesla offers with the model 3 and y. rivian has a huge overlap with this customer base, and if they price r2 right it will sell decently.
