I tried my first RAN charge in Las Vegas last night and it wouldn’t charge by just plugging in and had me use the app. Long story short, I had to call Rivian Service and they had me delete and add my credit card which worked. I asked the service agent whether I would have to use the app each time or whether it would now work just plugging in and she said the app was needed to pick the pedestal. I didn‘t try it but wondering if that is correct - I thought/hoped it was plug and charge.

Thanks

I have done many RAN charges and never used the app at all. But all of mine were before they started billing, mine were all free.

Should be plug and charge so not sure what that agent was talking about. Probably there was just something wrong with your payment details, so hopefully a one time occurrence.

Agree with the others. I have never had to interact with the app at a RAN. However I am not sure if there was some handshaking with the app behind the scenes as my Riv app is almost always open and with me.

Thanks to everyone responding. That is what I was hoping was supposed to happen.

I didn’t even know you could use the app. My R1T is too new to having ever experienced when it was free. I have just plugged and charged at least a half dozen times now at two different locations.

On the other hand, I tried to set up plug and charge on EVgo — I thought I read I could. It doesn’t seem to work. I always have to use the app to start a charge. I contacted EVgo tech support and they said Rivian wasn’t supported yet.

You CAN set up plug and charge for EVgo. I have done it. But it requires multiple steps. You first have to set it up in the app. Then you need to go to a charger and plug in to finish setting it up. Then the NEXT time you go to an EVgo charger it should be just plug and charge. If you have finished this process then in the EVgo app under "vehicles" it will show your Rivian as "Enrolled in Autocharge+".

This is a strange one as when the OTA for plug and charge at EVgo came out I followed the instructions and set it up. A few people have said it no longer works or they can’t configure it but after every OTA I like to test things, one thing I test is if plug and charge still works at EVgo, it still works fine for me.

Edit: I wish they would partner with EA, I prefer EA as it is cheaper than EVgo

Agreed. I don't know why EA doesn't make their charger status available to the public (e.g. on PlugShare and in the Rivian navigation) and I don't know why EA doesn't implement plug and charge. Both would help my overall impression of EA.

You could have in theory, probably fixed your credit card from a web browser on a computer instead. That's the only reason it needed the app.

I remember seeing posts saying it was an option and people were setting it up. Then I saw another YouTuber just casually say he wished it were available for Rivian. This conflict confused me.

Now after trying it myself and even getting mixed responses from EVgo themselves, I am still confused. The first tech who tried to walk me through it just noted I was missing the authorization screen and elevated the issue. The first EVgo email I received just had generic set up instructions— that I’d already established didn’t work. Neither of these techs mentioned it didn’t work for Rivian. When I replied to that with screen shots of the missing parts the reply was “oh we don’t do Rivian, sorry.”

If they don’t do Rivian why is it not telling me that when adding my VIN? It recognizes “2023 Rivian R1T.” It seems at that point the app should just say, “oh we don’t do Rivian, sorry.”

EVGo has said they dropped autocharge+ support for Rivian. If you had it setup before they dropped support for it then it will still work, but setting up a new vehicle isn't currently supported.
