Gen1 v1 Spare Tire Kit - Doesn’t Inspire Confidence

I’ve never had a spare tire kit that has three pieces, two that are plastic and don’t connect in any way. They simply sit on top of each other. Yikes. 7000lbs on this setup does not inspire confidence.

I know v2 has the puck attached to the jack and I think it’s a bigger jack so no need for the base. And they include wheel chocks.

Rivian should really replace the v1 kits. It seems like a safety issue waiting to happen.

Most cars I've had with included tire change stuff left something to be desired. I consider it a fact of life and plan on buying my own stuff to replace it for every vehicle I buy.

I have a bottle jack and jack pucks in my frunk. I don't expect I will ever use the supplied kit unless I need to jack up two spots at once.

As someone who has actually used this kit to install a spare on an icy mountain pass: yes, you're right. It looks quite untrustworthy.

Rivian has added chocks and beefed up the kit in later builds. Definitely buy your own chocks and jack.

Also note, Rivians only have a parking brake for the back two wheels, which means when you get a flat in the back, only one tire is supplying traction when you jack it up. Not at all confidence inspiring on a snowy, slippery grade. It's the worst of all possible worlds. At least a non-quad ICE has a transmission which applies some traction to the front wheels when in park! That's where the chocks come in quite handy. Get some with a fair amount of friction on them.

Only if it’s FWD and some AWD. On a truck you’d still need chocks or to put it in 4WD before jacking up so that the rear parking brakes also prevent the front tires from spinning.

I've seen some really sketchy factory jack setups on my parents old american cars. It feels like something they are always trying to save cost and weight with. I guess im lucky because I still haven't had to pull mine out.

i have, they've said nothing other than it is what it is. i had previously asked for them to change out my spare tire kit for the newer one but they said no. this is v2 of the spare tire kit in case folks haven't seen it.

Thank you - I'd forgotten that the parking brake only affects the rear wheels...What do you have/like for tire chocks?

Every vehicle I have ever seen is the same way. Parking/Emergency brake only applies to the rear wheels.
