My Gen 2 R1T moans pretty loud when warming up too - my trips to work are short - about 5 miles and is still moaning when I arrive at work - it is very noticable, but does not shake the dash. It's been in the 25 - 35 degree range and it is just as loud. When i turn off the cabin heat i do have a sigh or relief.

Not normal, my Gen2 R1T warms up in the morning being outside all night in freezing temps and makes an amount of noise I would call ambient, as in, I don’t notice it.
Thank you!

Thank you! So sounds like a mixed bag of some experiencing and others not. Will you have yours looked at?

My G2 R1S heat pump is fairly loud if it's in the garage and I've jacked it up to hi to warm it up. Kinda hard to tell how loud yours really is when you're jamming your phone nearly up into the wheel well.
Haha. Its loud. Like people staring and asking about it.

If I crank my G2 R1S full tilt the heat pump noise is definitely noticeable but only outside the vehicle (video #1). Nothing inside rattles or anything. During normal operation, it is much quieter (video #2). Inside the vehicle sounds like video #3. I’ll take outside noise for the increased efficiency every day of the week.

Note: at least on my iPhone, putting the volume at 1/2 replicates the sound level in reality. The video sounds like a chainsaw at full volume but that is not accurate.

The heat pump on my 2024 Model 3 is very quiet in comparison so hopefully subsequent Rivian heat pumps will follow suit.

Appreciate the detailed response and videos. So i think yours is very similar. Are you accepting as “normal” or plan to have it checked at all?

I accept it as normal. It is louder than my G1 was, but I am glad for the heat pump. It’s a little obnoxious when its on full blast, but that is pretty rare for me.

I’m just glad I’m in AZ and don’t need my heat much. Between the noise and the steering wheel vibration, it sucks plain and simple

I didn't mind the noise, but last week it was super loud (think jet engine) and then a smell of burnt plastic filled the cabin. Didn't get any heat after that. Tried soft and hard resets, no luck. Now in service. A bunch of R1S Gen 2s have had this issue according to r/Rivian. At least the loaner they gave me was a quad R1T with working heat (must be a Gen1)!

Hi! New Rivian owner here. Love the car, but been to the shop twice since September and still not fixed. Makes obnoxious noise when its first warming up the cabin and even shakes the dash and steering wheel sometimes. Tech added refrigerant and said the noise is “normal” but there is just no way.

Anyone else experiencing or have any thoughts? Attaching the video.

Our A/C and heat did not work when we received our R1S. Rivian said that the heat pump system was undercharged. After they charged the system, it still didn't work correctly, but it was very loud like yours. So we took it in again, and Rivian service said that the heat pump system was now overcharged. They adjusted the heat pump refrigerant pressure again and now it works fine. A little noisy, but nothing like your video.

Yup i'm hearing the same thing - i figured it was more pronounced as it is pretty cold here these days - 19F or 3F with windchill. So it's always working right now. It's annoying and definitely more noticeable in an EV with no other noise to cover it up. Even our heatpump on the house is louder these days given how hard it has to work. I put in a service request and got a call back and they asked me to the do the full reset which didn't help. I'll call them and see if what else they have to say. Video attached - I turn the fan speed up and you then the "whirring" matches it shortly after.

I couldn't completely tell from the video, but does yours have a low rumbling at speed 2, but then as you speed it up it goes away? If so, were you able to get it resolved?

Kind of opposite. Vibrations that pick up at higher speeds. I am dropping off I may for a small list of things to get looked at. Will report back.

Ours makes a little sound at lower speeds but then seems like higher speeds reduce it. Have a service appt for next week either way - which ever gets it fixed first report back!

Buzzing noise and vibration seem normal for the GEN2 heat pump setup. Haven't heard it quite as loud as your video but ours does the same and vibrates the heck out of the steering wheel when its running at 'full speed'. Ours is in service now for a related HVAC compressor issue where it makes a terrible 'clacking' sound when waking or sleeping. Overall not impressed with HVAC in GEN2 vs GEN1. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Mine always makes this loud awful noise, whether the AC or heat is on. I e taken it in twice and they say it’s perfectly normal. I think they need to recall. If you take it in 5 times and they are unable to repair it, you may be able to get compensated by the manufacturer if your state agrees that it is a lemon (look up your state’s lemon law statutes).
