There is still a manual release handle that's easily accessible in the front seats if that helps. My Gen 1 owner buddy accidentally uses it in my car by habit.

I have come to realize EVs are moving fast..my 2022 model 3 now comes with more range and a lower price. My r1s is now behind the times. But I drive a car for 10+ years otherwise I would be spending money to stay up to date for a year and then behind the next. Until Rivian solves vampire drain I am happy with my gen1

But why? Are rear seat occupants less important? Are rear seat occupants somehow more capable of pulling out a panel to open the doors in a crash?

If 12v is dead in a crash, there isn't really a good option for the rear occupants to get out. There isn't enough space between seats and roof to climb through the front. Breaking a glass and climbing out is the only realistic option. Same if you have kids in the car. You can't just reach back and open the door. This is probably the dumbest idea for cars in this century.
