Grumpy Rivian drivers no wave

Some people don't care if they have the same vehicle, not really a big deal. Here in rural TX we all want to our neighbors.

I was in my R1T at Costco over the weekend loading up my stash for a fall BBQ. A limestone R1S stopped near me and waved. I almost missed it because I could barely hear the R1S honk at me, but I happened to look up then waved and smiled back.

However, it made me realize how truly pathetic the R1S horn is.

Look, no offense, but I'm not waving or flashing my lights at you. I adopted the motorcycle wave many years ago under protest, but I'm drawing the line at the "Same OEM Wave."

That said, I'm all in on the "Compass Yellow Wave" as that's like a once-a-year event.

Usually around here in San Diego area, owners wave back or give thumbs up. However, I did have a few who just ignored me. Even stopped at a light side by side, this one guy just looked over down at my truck but refused to look over at me to make eye contact. lol...oh well

Many years ago in my youth, I spent several years as a motorcycle officer on the Tallahassee Police Department. Even way back then, you always acknowledged another motor when you passed, and not just a police motor. When you are on a motor all day, every day, this behavior becomes ingrained in your psyche. To this day, I always wave at passing police vehicles, even if he's tucked in sandbagging.

I do always wave and acknowledge passing Rivians if I see them in time. There are not many Rivians in the Florida Panhandle, but I have come across a few. Waving to others is both nice and friendly. It also demonstrates that you are paying attention to your driving.

When there's a high number of enthusiasts that drive a particular vehicle, the wave thing catches on. As a Corvette owner, I used to wave at all Corvettes. As a Miata owner, I waved at all Miatas. I never see Vipers on the road but I bet they wave back. My wife makes me wave at all Wranglers when I drive hers. The like minded enthusiasts wave back for the most part. And some of the time, people are distracted, or just miss the wave.

For the Rivian, I can tell the difference between enthusiasts like myself and everyone else. I often get nothing, not even a look in my direction. I live in a rural area where I exchange waves with all my neighboors, regardless of vehicle. But sometimes, like yesterday when I encountered an R1S in a parking lot, we exchanged thumbs-up in mutual appreciation.

I think it's because I'm stupidly excited and happy with my R1T that I wave like a teenager when I see another Rivian. The lack of reaction has bummed me out. Is your Rivian really just another vehicle? Are you really too cool for giddy excitement? Am I still just as big a geek as ever? Oh well, same as it ever was.
