Gut check - Tire Strategy

2023 Gen 1 R1S. 18k miles, 22"s with OEM Scorpions are down to 3/32. (honestly terrible tires)
I also have OEM 21" rims in the garage.

I am thinking of deploying 2 sets of tires, but correct me if I am insane.
21"s - Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 $400*4 use for Daily Drivers - Highway Roadtrips
22"s - BFG ATs - Trail Terrain $250*4 use in wet and winter - Ski Trips, Camping, limited offroad.

Will likely use Americas Tire/Discount Tire.

Bonus - I have 2000mi highway road trip in April (dry), should I change now, or after I get back?

If you can swing it, having separate all season tires for highway driving and all terrain tires for special occasions is the way to go. The range hit with all terrain tires is pretty massive, more than I care to tolerate day to day. (data attached showing Nokian Outpost nAT's vs Perrelli All Seasons.

I've personally found the Perrelli all seasons to be a good tires. I've gotten 35,000 miles out of three different sets. I'm not sure why so many people are having such a different experience....

another 21" option are Bridgestone Alenzas....just replaced the Pirellis with these...quieter,responsive, all season rated....I'm very pleased w them

Personally, I'd do the opposite. 22s for daily drivers/normal road trips. 21s (or better yet: 20s if you can find somebody to swap with) for the all-terrains. The taller sidewalls will help with ride quality over washboard roads, etc.

Sanity check. 22" tire size is 275/50/22, and 21" tire size is 275/55/21.

Since you wanting some sort of AT tire, the use-case benefits from having higher sidewalls than lower sidewalls. In other words, 275/55 with a higher sidewall is better suited for AT tire AND kinds of driving you mentioned (e.g., ski trips, camping and some off-roading).

The 275/50 with AS tires would be much better suited for highways.

Terrible in what way? If your priorities are anything but efficiency... You are probably right.

What you choose to run instead depends on your priorities. Engineering is a game of compromises. Just like how characters are configurable in MMO roleplaying games, you can't max every single available character trait. Boost one trait, the inverse happens to another.

There is not one single tire that has max efficiency, max traction, max durability and max tire life. So, when you have multiple priorities/uses, you are not insane for wanting more than one set.

We’ve got a set of aero wheels that we put on my wife’s car for road trips, otherwise we just keep the ATs on both of our rivians. Swapping them frequently is possible but it’s kind of a pain in the ass.

Same. I had the 21" Pirellis and just changed them out for Michelin Defenders at 38k+. I probably could've gone longer but missed a tire rotation cycle. One tire was too far gone, and my 5th spare was close to the same fate.

Switch your plan for use case.
21" should be the off-road rim and 22" should be the high-way rim. You'll want the taller side wall for anytime you have to air down.

I would recommend 20" tires for any off-road use. You need the larger sidewall, especially if you end up having to lower tire pressure.

And, to be pedantic, the difference maker is ratio of sidewall to overall diameter. Higher ratio means larger, elongated, and meaningful increase in contact patch once aired down—better traction over obstacles.

FWIW I have 16k on the LTXs we put on the R1S Dune to get something quieter and more efficient and another couple thousand on the R1T DM replacement for the 21 Pirellis. I am underwhelmed by the efficiency. I lost 7-10% vs the OEMs when I made the switch on the Pirellis. The Dune gets 1.9-2.1 m/kwh on hwy. (It's a 280 mile vehicle with a freaking max pack.)

I know lots of folks love them but I am not sure impressed.

True, but there is an AT option for the 21" wheel, which would save money on having to buy new wheels.
