just put your phone somewhere else if you don't need it charged
the OP’s issue is putting OTHER items on the pad that Rivian warns against.

I assume the charing pad is as easy to lift up in R2 as it is in R1 vehicles. You could simply lift it up and unplug the connector if this is a big concern for you. Or create a small jumper using male and female molex connectors that are compatible to the charging pad and install an inline switch in the jumper to enable/disable the charing pad. You can hide the switch in the center console.
I believe it is (might even be same part). There are plastic tabs in the front. Insert thin plastic cards to disengage them, then lift/pivot. Wiring is underneath and towards rear. But completely unnecessary. Observe precautions or just put a non-conductive medium between pad and object.

Options:

1. Put items that you consider to potentially cause issues in the glove box (you have 2).
2. Disable the charging pad altogether.
3. As others have suggested-a non-conductive cover.

Agreed, but ye old engineer brain does not default to the layman's solution most of the time.
BTW, I just installed one of these pads in my gen1. It’s great so far. Should have left the factory like this from the get go.

I put stuff there all the time, including credit cards. Nothing happens.

I use the charging pad for holding everything (paper clips, pens, wallet, change, etc), except charging my phone. Again, this is a non-issue. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.

Yep. Again, Rivian's warning is a very broad CYA disclaimer... meant to give them the least amount of legal liability—however unlikely the freak/fringe accident may be. If there was truly an imminent danger lurking, there would have already been millions of cases and lawsuits against the likes of Apple for their MagSafe wireless chargers.

The R2 has almost too many other places to store things. Not one but two gloveboxes—that's two more than any R1 has. A deep center console compartment. Plus the drawer below. Plus the open air cubby/tray ahead of the drawer. Modifying the charging pad amounts to a solution looking for a [warranty] problem.

While I agree that you can just toss anything on the Rivian pad, that's also not a fair comparison. The Apple chargers are ultra-intelligent, and the garbage in the Rivians is ultra dumb. The Apple ones are so smart, your phone is able to recognize each one and save settings for each one. It wouldn't provide any power at all without an actual phone connection.

It should be possible for Rivian to disable charging with a software update. I have a magnetic stand for my phone which doesn't provide power. Also, there are stands that do, but as long as you don't connect them to wall outlet, they simply won't charge your phone.
I would love Rivian to consider disabling them as I don't like using wireless chargers. I know, to each their own.
Bro we don't even have a valet mode this many years later and you think they'll take time away from cell shading improvements to disable wireless charging?

The charger is not the intelligent part of that equation, the phone is. The charger just has an NFC chip in it that identifies itself to the phone (part of the negotiation involved in the Qi standard). The phone simply knows whether the ID has been seen before to remember settings like Night Stand mode and widget configuration, or if it has an Apple-specific ID to show the special animations like the Apple cases/wallets.

The charger itself has basic electrical intelligence (assuming it conforms to the Qi standard) to prevent overheating and detect foreign objects. The module in the cars is probably exactly the same as what you'd find in any MagSafe/Qi2 charging mat, aside from automotive packaging.

Being that my phone doesn't have wireless charging capability and I would like to put my wallet in that location I too would like the option to turn it off.

Best solution as mentioned earlier, buy a mouse pad and cut to fit the area and when not needed just toss it in one of the many front storage areas…
