Not sure when this started, but by default the HVAC is set to floor and windshield by default whenever I start the car (remotely or not). Is there a setting that changed at some point? I don't remember it always being this way.

I prefer the vents open.

It's switched to heating configuration instead of cooling. That's the default for heating, your climate must be set to auto.

I agree. The default heat options were not like this last winter. Something has changed. Curious if anyone else agrees. Or if there is a fix.

This vent configuration is the same as last year, and, like most other vehicles using an auto HVAC setting. Keeps the windshield heated/clear and, provides cabin heat through the foot wells. Nothing has changed this in my 3 years of R1T ownership.

I was about to ask the same question. Not sure about using auto climate but I'm constantly turning on at least the outside vents to clear windows. I've got a service appt in two weeks for ting washers and plan to ask them about the foot well heat. Gen2 and find my legs are quite cold (temp set to 75) compared to everything else. Recently put my phone in the bottom center console area during a trip. Picked it up and noticed it was really cold.

Mine does the same.

Will turning off auto fix this? Though I feel like I've done that a number of times and it reverts to auto....

I remember similar behavior last winter. Only the floor and windshield vents open by default with heating. However, what seems to have changed for me is the fan speed. I have my settings set to auto and low and a temperature of 70 degrees. Initially the fan runs pretty strong even when set on low. I understand this to get the vehicle to the proper cabin temp, but it never lowers the fan speed. It runs high and loud seemingly indefinitely with the heating. I had a 45 minute drive in the R1S yesterday and it was blasting the entire time. I checked the setting multiple times and it was always on auto and low. Shouldn't the auto fan speed lower after it reaches the set cabin temp?

Interesting mix of replies here. Some, like me think that isn't how it always was and the incorrect way to manage HVAC and others are just wrong :CWL:.

We can just agree that everything about how Rivian handles HVAC is horrible . From the stupidness of motorized vents, to this oddity of floor and windshield default. It should just revert to however I last left it. I should NOT need to click the screen 9 times to get what I want.

Just noticed this yesterday as well. I really don't think this was the same behavior as last year because I feel like I would have clearly recalled having to turn the vents on every single time... @kapsjt ditto on the weird fan behavior too. I had to turn off auto and manually turn the fans down because after like 10 mins I was like why are the fans still just absolutely blasting?

I’m fairly new to Rivian about 2 months. And I have been driving an Ioniq 5 for 2 and half years. One interesting thing I noticed that during entire time with Ioniq I never really seemed to need to fiddle with HVAC — auto mostly, feel chilly up temp a bit. fan stays low — that’s it for over two years, never thought about it, life is good.

Rivian is different. I need to play with it every day and every drive. Feet are always cold. No ventilation. Never really sure what is fresh intake or recirculation. Checking climate screen window and foot wells are all red but I’m still cold. But a few days ago I saw first time window and foot wells are all in blue but my wife and I both feel nice and warm. So I tried to save that setting for future use but blue foot well never showed up again. So I checked what blue means in Rivian HVAC, it’s color for cooling of course! What is going on. Hope I’m not the only one.

Looks like "AUTO" is up to its shenanigans again. Or you've turned on remote heating (in the app), which also sometimes does that.

02 cents, I hate it. And one of the reasons I never use auto. Wildly unpredictable results and exactly the opposite of my preference, which would be windshield off, vents on, floor off. 🤷

My R1T always stayed the way I left it until several months ago. Now my vents are usually closed when I get in the truck and I have to turn them on manually. This is deferent behavior from the way it used to be. Soft and hard resets did not resolve this issue. Something has changed for the worse!

30 minute drive this morning with HVAC settings on auto and "low" fan speed. Temp set to 70 on both sides. Outside temperature 35F. The R1S quickly warmed the cabin at this start of the drive, which is great, but the HVAC fan was blasting for the entire drive. It never slowed. This is loud and annoying. I tried to see what medium and high fan speed on auto would do, and it did not change. So the fan speed did not change between low, medium and high while using auto. Is this normal? Or could I have a faulty sensor that is sensing the cabin air is cooler than it actually is?
