What upgrades are available for the 12 year old teslas now?
Take this with a huge grain of salt since it was generated by AI, but:

Third-party EV repair shops specialize in these upgrades, sourcing refurbished or salvaged packs from wrecked Teslas. Tesla service centers can handle software unlocks or basic swaps but rarely do capacity upgrades. Here are notable providers (based on 2025 data; contact for quotes as prices fluctuate with pack availability):

it’s accurate. I’m well aware of the answer actually, but it was a suggestion to OP about what is likely to be possible in the future if Rivian sells as much as Tesla.

Gruber also has packs and charger retrofits for the Roadster.

Maybe one day the creators will release the required documents to allow the aftermarket to make modifications. There's got to be a mad scientist out there who needs to find the limits of the bosch motors.

At least for the Roadster, replacement packs generally have more kWh in the same package and come with new BMS. The price is about $30k, and is a 2+ year waiting list. The last I heard though is you couldn't even get on the waiting list until you had a brick.

Meanwhile there are people swapping 2024 Nissan leaf batteries into first generation leafs, in their driveway. There are tons of people pulling the drivetrain from leafs to do ev conversions. Evs aren't untouchable.

As far as being able to pay a shop or rivian to do it, I'd say don't get your hopes up too much. Wether or not it is possible and practical diy will be up to how we, the community, handle these vehicles as they age. It's going to take enthusiasts making an effort to make that happen. If you leave it up to a company to develop a product, it will likely be made proprietary and will likely be expensive, and like many others have stated likely won't happen.

Also remember that solid state batteries are not something that is readily available on the market. Yes companies are developing them and claim to be bringing them to market "soon" but for them to be available in mass quantities could take 3-5 years. Even then they could be like lfp are right now. An upgraded or rebuilt pack might be available but it being solid state could take the better part of a decade after solid states are available.

This is also going to depend on how proprietary the gen 1 rivians actually are and how proprietary they are compared to gen2. For all we know a gen2 battery could be plug and play with a gen 1, but it's not going to be a major upgrade. Or it could be locked up like fort knox.

Guess what I'm trying to say is: if you want it, you will have to make it happen yourself.

I'm no engineer, but I know a little bit about the underlying technology.

This is straight-up not going to happen.

This isn't a flashlight battery.
EDIT: All but one of the battery cells are not flashlight batteries.

There are significant parts of the vehicle that are designed entirely around the battery specification. The entire HVAC & heating cooling system is designed around how much heating and cooling all systems of the car need, battery included. The charge management software is designed around DCFC specifications as they apply to the battery chemistry in your car. The navigation software is designed around how your battery chemistry reacts to different ambient temperatures and required charge times.

There are significant parts of your car that are engineered around the battery you have.

Its planned obsolescence by not just Rivian but with all EV makers.

They all want you to get another vehicle and not keep using the old.

I'm upset that this makes so much sense. Thanks for crushing all my hopes and dreams. All of them. Including non-ev related. Fml.

My old Chevy volt is not a common, mainstream car. But there are 3rd parties that will put higher capacity later year modules into an older battery case for me. Of course that particular BMS doesn’t care as much about the battery details as a Rivian. And it costs more than the value of the car.

I'm sure 10 years+ down the road there will be upgrade solutions available, but the market isn't there yet.

The #1 issue is that very few batteries fail. These OG batteries in our Rivian might go 1 million miles. We just don't have enough data yet.

The original Prius had Nimh batteries and there are higher capacity aftermarket Lithium ones that swap in.
