Here is another anecdote: my wife has a model Y and recently used a supercharger with a damaged pin. The damaged pin also damaged her charging port and eventually she got stranded and needed an expensive tow to a Tesla SC as each subsequent charge continued to damage the sleeve around one of the pins. Had this happened to my Rivian with an adapter, I could have easily swapped out (I carry the extra adapter from A2Z) or chosen to use only CCS chargers to get home. I would never change my charging port from CCS to NACS as I like using primarily the adapter for supercharging. That way I have a buffer on a long road trip from damaging the charging port in my vehicle.

It'll never happen. But the NACS guys have to carry adaptors too.
So the new Quad Launch addition comes with the NACS charge built in. I also spoke to the Rivian guys and they said you can also now order the a new Tri Motor with the NACS port built in as well.

Pointless. For the foreseeable future you would still want a NACS to CCS adapter and frankly plugging in an adapter takes like 3 seconds.

Considering it already takes a full month to get a basic service appointment at a Rivian Service Center - they really don’t have the resources to spare on something so low value
The adapter isn’t the problem. The throttling it causes in places like here in AZ is the problem

Nope.

And even if so, it would be expensive. It's not just "swap a physical port", J3400 requires separating AC and DC after the plug, rather than having nice simple separate wires. Which means adding logic circuitry. Which means re-certifying the retrofit vehicle.

It's one thing when doing a full redesign for all vehicles produced from x date and beyond. It's a whole other ballgame to recertify modified vehicles.

Just look at Nissan - the old Leaf had CHAdeMO for DC charging. CHAdeMO uses a physically separate port for AC vs. DC. Old Leafs have a J1772 port for AC, and a CHAdeMO for DC. The new 2026 Leaf? They switched to J3400, but only for DC. It still has two separate ports, one for AC, and one for DC. They're just J1772 for AC, and J3400 for DC. I guarantee they got pretty late in development of the new model when J3400 became "clearly the winner" and instead of completely rearchitecting their updated Leaf, they just swapped what was going to be the CHAdeMO port for J3400. (CHAdeMO is still the primary DC plug in Japan, with ChaoJi (essentially CHAdeMO 3.0) poised to take over, requiring only a passive adapter for bidirectional CHAdeMO support.)

Yes, but the question was not "Will Rivian ever offer NACS ports?", but "Will Rivian ever offer NACS port retrofits for those without NACS?" to which my answer stands.

Now that Rivian is manufacturing their own NACS ports for the 2026 R1S/T and for the R2 and R3, will they offer a port swap to pre 2026 vehicles, or are we doomed to forever carry around adapters...
Oh that adapter is sooooooo heavy.
What do you think this company is? a charity?

Tire repair kit, first-aid kit, mobile charger. Already carrying those along. Add an insignificant charger adapter to the mix. Not even a thought for me.

Let's say they did. It would cost 2-5K dollars in parts and labor to get it swapped, and an adapter costs around 200 bucks. Why would you pay 10X as much?
