Now that Rivian is manufacturing their own NACS ports for the 2026 R1S/T and for the R2 and R3, will they offer a port swap to pre 2026 vehicles, or are we doomed to forever carry around adapters...

It'll never happen. But the NACS guys have to carry adaptors too.

I would be surprised if they offer it.

I for one would not get it if offered, I see no real benefit. It does not open the Supercharger network to any additional locations over what we currently have. The adapter is very easy to use. For the near future we would need the adapter for CCS to NACS for most of the other networks.

Pointless. For the foreseeable future you would still want a NACS to CCS adapter and frankly plugging in an adapter takes like 3 seconds.

Considering it already takes a full month to get a basic service appointment at a Rivian Service Center - they really don’t have the resources to spare on something so low value

Rivian won't offer CCS for 2026 model vehicles, so basically no chance they'd ever engineer a port swap in the other direction either.

I could actually see it happening--if the entire lineup, and the rest of the industry in the US is moving to NACS, a retrofit port kind of makes sense if you're planning out a 7-10+ year lifespan for these vehicles.

But I also agree with:

1) it's not just changing a cover plate. Sure, the communications protocol is CCS, but aren't the AC and DCFC pins joined on NACS? There's got to be some pretty involved under the hood changes, presumably requiring a full onboard-charger swap?

2) I wouldn't bother with my own truck. Mainly because I already have chargers and adapters, and yes, it wouldn't mean I would carry fewer adapters in the end. I'd have to replace my NACS-to-CCS with a CCS-to-NACS for non-SC, and just like our Teslas I'd also have to have a J1772-to-NACS for all the occasional L2 chargepoint type sites. PLUS, the charge port would still be on the "wrong side" for NACS, and while there are more V4 stalls coming online, they're still dwarfed by short-cable sites.

I'd possibly pay for a full NACS swap to the front passenger side, but honestly, that convenience isn't worth more than $2k to me, which I bet is way lower than Rivian could ever charge.

It actually requires adding extra contactors inside the vehicle in order to meet safety requirements. CCS is safer because AC and DC are physically isolated.

Would be nice but, meh. Rivian have better things to do to like becoming a reliably profitable ongoing concern.

Of all the potential reasons to feel "doomed", not having an NACS port ranks just below being smothered to death by baby bunnies on my list.

Personally I would NOT take it. I have the adapter for over a year now and I never have used it once.....in fact, I haven't charged in public in almost 2 years.

If anything, I would rather they offer to upgrade the wireless charger pad on the Gen1's. We have a 2023 Gen1 R1T and at first it didn't bather me, but now, I just plug it in with a cable.

Yes.

You also need to convert not only the port but the rest of the vehicle :)

Joke aside, I actually think its a benefit to have CCS1 with an adapter over the native NACS Since it gives you more flexibility of charging stations.

also, they would have to start providing a CCS1 to NACS or would it be NACS to CCS1 adapter....either way.....a waste of $$$$$
