Anyone notice the "upgrades" section in their settings menus? I have a feeling this will come s00n ?

Seriously though, I think this is important to help move shop vehicles too. If Rivian offered this capability then folks who want DMP could grab a DM vehicle from the shop and just pay to upgrade to P.
That's a good point about moving shop vehicles. Similarly, when I was looking for mine in June I asked the sales advisor if they could swap wheels on a truck I otherwise liked. They agreed to the swap and I gave them my money.

They could even offer marginal "Aftermarket" upgrades to Dual Performance

A few ideas:
Sport Mode but no extra HP... suspension full drop, +launch mode $1000
Sport Mode with some extra HP... same as above but 583 HP $2500
Full Sport Mode ... $5000

I could also see them selling the Gary Launch mode to current PDM owners for a nominal fee as another upgrade.

I look at upgrades like this differently than something like BMW charging to use hardware already in the car (like a seat heater). In our case, we are already utilizing the hardware every day.

Motors (and even gas engines) are already performance limited / tuned by the manufacturer to prevent us from ragging them out or burning them up early while still under warranty. If we owned ICE vehicles, I would equate this to performance tuning or adding aftermarket mods like NO2. So, I might be willing to pay a little extra for it.

You could argue that PDM costing $5000 on a new truck has an actual cost for Rivian since there might be a slightly higher chance of a warranty claim on a CV joint or drive unit because of the high torque things that happen when you launch.

I'm thinking there will need to be some accommodation for leased vehicles.

A straight $5k purchase price is not going to increase the resale value of my lease since that's already been determined by the residual value.

I'm guessing either a subscription model or a pro-rated charge based on the remaining term of the lease.

Example: $5k for Performance Upgrade/36 month lease = $138.88/month.
24 months remaining on lease x $133.88/month = $3,333.33

Or maybe some incentive to pay upfront rather than monthly?

Makes sense

They won't give you the same flexibility anymore.. trust me I asked. On Gen 2 they're outright refusing to make any changes to how it's already configured

I was referring to the wheel swap.

Long story short the vehicle that I was supposed to take delivery of had issues and I needed to swap to a new vin. I asked them to swap my wheels on an incoming vehicle, and they told me they would not do that for Gen 2

This is exactly my scenario. Want Performance, but my build spec didn’t have any in the shop. Ordered without hoping I can upgrade later

To be honest, once you are in the sub 5.0 range, what difference does it make. 5.0, 4.0, 3.0, 2.5 - it’s not really usable in 99% of driving and most people are just hanging on to keep the car straight. I suppose if people want to pay $5k+ to use something a couple times a year, I’ll take the revenue boost. But it’s not like you are going from 6.5 to 3.5.

I have PDM gen1 and Sport mode actually helps me a good bit when passing on 2 lane rural roads. I'm around the vehicle(s) I'm trying to pass much quicker with the extra HP.

Pretty much the only time I use sport, but it is a nice feature.

They will release a software unlock option in the future. I confirmed this with Rivian. I bought a Dual Motor R1T and to keep the price under 80k, I kept it Non-Performance. Rivian said they will give the option in the future to do a software upgrade to get the Performance speed. They didn't say when or how much. But I guess it'll be sometime in Q4 and probably be 5K.. I really hope it's a bit cheaper to entice people who don't want it, to purchase it. Maybe during the end of the quarter they might make a sweet deal.
But it is coming.. haha

I don't think the price will be any different pre- or post- purchase. Rivian is bound to annoy people on either side of the purchase if they make the pricing different. If anything, I think they'd make it more expensive post-purchase to entice more people to buy it up front.
