$899.37. How does this amount compared to gas cars?

One positive thing I observed was that the number of Rivian chargers available along the Fwy 5. As long as I stayed on Fwy 5 (California) I didn't have to go to other EV chargers. The Rivian charger was definitely cheaper and more convenient to charge. Thanks Rivian and please keep up the good work.

That’s only about 25 bucks cheaper than what my lifted hemi on 35s would have cost assuming a nationwide average of 3.49. Then again, I don’t have a pump at my house. Then again, I dont really have to “plan” a road trip in a ICE the same way I’d have to in an EV. This is why I’m quite excited for the ramcharger.

“It depends”
You’re looking at the wrong metric
People will make comparisons of apples to oranges
Gas is well above the national average in CA, where you mentioned

Maybe you can play around on GasBuddy to see where the tipping point would be

It is likely more meaningful to look at what the equivalent cost is mpg or even miles per dollar
If you are road tripping in a Prius you lost money
If you were road tripping in a Tacoma with parts to make it equally competitive off road, you are likely looking at 10-15mpg in which case you undoubtedly came ahead

Is this about right?

$899 total at about $0.40 per kWh = 2247 kWh

4200 m / 2247 kWh = 1.87 m/kWh

Or for a higher cost per kWh:

$899 total at about $0.50 per kWh = 1798 kWh

4200 m / 1798 kWh = 2.33 m/kWh

Your cost is in line with my recent 1200 m trip.

Hmm. I just did 1,900 total for a bit over $208. There was about 600 miles worth in there where there was no cost to charge with a free desitination.

Did you change the oil when you got home? Did it tip you over into the $1000 30k service at the dealership?

This is California where the average price for the regular is $4.80 and higher than that at most places along the 5. So EV charge rates are still a pretty significant savings.

That said, I too am excited about the RAM Charger and thing range extending trucks for towing and real distance use are a no-brainer. I tow our horse trailer, but mostly only locally within the range of my Rivian's capacity - but if I had a range extended EV truck I'd be much more comfortable taking them longer distances.

Seems more appropriate to compare to a pickup or large SUV.

Simple first order approximation: You don't save much or lose much if you are only charging at public level 3 stations vs refueling with gasoline.

(However, if I charge at home at night, 4200 miles worth of charging costs about $150).

Possibly using the miles per Kw like I avg. 2.08. And the avg cost of gas, (Hi Octain), and a multiplier, to remove the cost per mile of Oil as well as a multiplier to add the higher tire cost for the EV tires. Only noting the home charge vs no one having a gas pump at home.
Some geeky statistician could get the one multiplier per state and calc the miles in the stats separately.
For me, I have an R1T, I need to compare to a 4x4 with 14.5" clearance and snow mode, not an SUV.

Your graph just confirms my belief that EV charging on the road really doesn't save a whole lot. When I was making a trip I noticed the gas price was around $4.xx. As you quoted only when you charge at home (specially with solar installed like at my house) it makes big difference.

I have found that I can 'fill up' at a Rivian charger for say 40, which might cost a tahoe like 80 (but the tahoe would go another 150 miles on a fill up).

If you pay a Tesla bang you price you probably are note saving much.

FWIW, I precisely tracked my charging cost for my first 10,000 miles. It came to 56% for a gas car (I think I used a hellcat which does not perform as well but I was trying to be fair). It was just about on the nose $1,000.

90-95% was home charging and the other 5-10% was high speed charging. Home charging was way cheaper.

@iBang: You spent a LOT more than I did on my 4100 mile roadtrip last year. The big difference is that I got free charging at all my overnight stops - I planned it that way. Also, I got 3 free charges at RAN stations (alas no more) and 1 free charge at EA. And three other chargers were per minute instead of per kWh, so they were also essentially free :). I spent a total of ~$330 for charging, according to my spreadsheet ...

Not ever state and charging networks have the same rules… Some chargers price by the total kilowatt delivered and other chargers go by the amount of time the vehicle is at the charger. So…. That also messes with the apples to apples between gas vs electric or even one persons 4000+ mile trip and another depending on state charging rules and network operator pricing models.

Yep, comparable to my 3200 mile trip. More exspensive than my 35 mph CRV but a little cheaper than my old 1/2 ton pickup. Fast charging is expensive and most people do not realize this. When everybody figures this out the anti-ev will increase.

So, I haven’t done any road tripping with my R1S. However, I live in Southern California and have solar, and battery back up. All of my driving so far has been local (less than 200 miles a day). I have a Tesla model 3 as well. My latest electric bill from San Diego gas and electric has them owing me $711. If you do a lot of road tripping, or drive more than 350 miles a day owning an EV is not going to be much cheaper. However, if you drive less than 200 miles a day and do 90% of your driving locally and have solar with battery back up, EV is the only way to go!
