I have also 100% parked at a ChargePoint and tried to plug-in and it’s busted. Twice. At that point, I’m like F it, I’m not moving..
The disappointing aspect of my encounter is that I'm pretty certain the charger is solely a CCS unit.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so...

Turning you charge rate down so it takes all night is another :)
So what you're saying to do is to fake it so the other party at least feels better about it?

More so that I feel sneaky and superior. With Gary running I can also later see a video the sad loser who lost the race for the charger. Eventually I hope Rivian adds the Tesla speaker function so I can tease and then berate the fool in real time.

Maybe open the tonneau cover remotely to release helium balloons in a victory celebration? The possibilities with the available tech are endless.

I left off the smiley face in this post as it was ineffective when you read my previous post.

It's probably a temprary phenominom. The OP wanting to charge at Whole Foods is likely just because he is new to EV. In gerneral, and particularly with Rivian, you can't count on level 2 for a trip. Even with Tesla I plan my overnight stops in relation to superchargers.

As hotels put in more plugs the tendency is to drop the power. But we will eventually get to the point where some hotels will charge for the service and provide more power.

Free and uncertain charging isn't much benefit because it is unreliable for planning. Which is why Rivian's Waypoint expenditures are dumb.

Whole Foods putting a couple of DCFC at the back of the lot and charging for electricity would be a lot more useful. My most visited Supercharger, which is out of state, is at a grocery store. That is ideal.
I'm not sure how Whole Foods came into the discussion, as this is in front of an Albertson's store. When I first found this charger and the one right in front of it, I was surprised that they were placed at two of the closest spots to the front door.

That's convenient for EV owners, but I'd prefer them to be a little distance away, similar to ElectrifyAmerica stations at Walmart locations. I've never sought out a Whole Foods store for charging...or anything else, for that matter. I'm guessing EV's are well received there and at REI stores, but in other settings, many people still wrinkle their nose when they see them. Accordingly, putting chargers next to the disabled parking spots and/or front doors can anger some of the ICE'asaurs/PetroPals/FossilFools.

I can almost hear one of them snarl "You can't spell 'privilege' without an 'E' and a 'V'!". If they ever do, I'll likely refrain from asking them "Can you spell 'privilege'?"

Not knowing upon my arrival what they were doing, I thought I'd let it slide. I wouldn't have posted this thread if they were gone when I came out. They weren't, so here we are.

Given my experience with Volta (and, frankly, with most retail/municipal L2 chargers), I'd bet the charger is broken so this guy figured he wasn't truly in anyone's way.

I'll admit I've done that, although I usually leave the broken charger plugged in for appearances :)
I get that and understand the sentiment. I'd likely do that if the unit was inoperable. That said, there were plenty of open spots and, as a Tesla, they couldn't plug it in, whether or not the plug was not functioning.

It's not lost on me that your comment preceded mine identifying this as a CCS unit, from memory and the enlarged pic.

More than anything, I just thought it was funny that I was shut out by a Tesla. The extra mile of range wouldn't have made the difference in whether or not I got home.

Probably cheaper to install them closer to the door ?

Yes, and the justification for installation is PR. No PR benefit hiding the charger.

The exception may be a tourism benefit in remote locations

No need for free public charging any longer IMO, it just encourages bad behavior and for what.. $1 worth of electricity or an open parking spot?
I don’t necessarily disagree. While it may only save the driver a buck in charging cost, if it helps bring EV owners in to fill their shopping cart, I'm guessing the store/stores footing the install and charging costs feel its worth it.

Time will tell...

What's the problem? Seems like you probably received 0 miles range in an hour as advertised.
That's funny! I was so focused on getting the pic and obscuring any identifiers for the Tesla, that I didn't even catch the message on the sign. To your point, I did, in fact, get 0 miles during the five minutes I was there...and unplugged. With this setup, the Tesla could've had the same 0 miles for the entire weekend.

If they could affordably place them nearer the street (50 feet away), they'd be more visible and might attract a greater number of EV owners. This might also minimize the negatives of having the spots blocked or dedicating prime spaces that frequently go unused at this location.

Almost every Tesla owner has a CCS to Tesla adaptor.

I do find that charging spots in the most inconvenient spots by traditional measurement, are the most convenient for me (ie actually available.
